How to Write Better: 10 Effective Strategies

Hey Again,

Following the positive feedback from my recent article, one comment caught my attention: "You really do have the talent to write." It made me chuckle because, truthfully, I don't consider myself a naturally gifted writer. Instead, I rely on a few tricks and, more importantly, a set of practical strategies that have significantly improved my writing.

Today, I want to share these strategies with you – 10 tried-and-true methods to elevate your writing, even if you don't identify as a wordsmith.

1. Write as naturally as you speak: I should've said "Write as you speak," but that well-intended advice can be a bit misleading. This type of writing is known as conversational writing, and it works best in an informal setting (although not limited). I will most likely write again to you specifically about this, but for now, here's what you need to take away:

This simple rule will make your writing seem more natural. It will help ensure your thinking is crystal clear and it will guarantee your point is understood by the widest possible audience.

Why it works: When we speak, we naturally simplify our language to help people understand what we have to say. We move logically from one idea to the next, maintaining a consistent thread through what we are saying.

2. Stick with simple words: Bestselling author John Grisham once remarked, “There are three types of words: (1) words we know; (2) words we should know; (3) words nobody knows. Forget those in the third category and use restraint with those in the second.”

Why it works: Writing with simplicity and directness is key to effective communication. Complex vocabulary can alienate readers and hinder comprehension.

3. Cut unnecessary words: The art of brevity lies in trimming unnecessary words. Each word should serve a purpose, contributing to the overall clarity and impact of your message.

Why it works: Eliminating unnecessary words streamlines your writing, making it more concise and engaging. Readers appreciate content that gets to the point.

4. Write directly to “you”: Establishing a direct connection with your readers by addressing them as “you” creates a more personal and engaging writing style.

Why it works: Personalizing your writing enhances reader engagement, making them feel directly involved in the conversation. It fosters a stronger connection between the writer and the audience.

5. Use subheadings as signposts: Subheadings act as guides, breaking up your content and directing readers to specific information. They play a crucial role in maintaining reader focus.

Why it works: Subheadings enhance the readability of your content, helping readers navigate and locate information quickly. They serve as visual cues, improving the overall user experience.

6. Use straightforward vocabulary: Clarity and strength in communication are achieved through the use of direct, active language. Avoiding the passive voice ensures that your message is conveyed clearly and assertively.

Why it works: Active voice adds immediacy and impact to your writing. It eliminates ambiguity and allows your message to resonate more effectively with the reader.

7. Enhance your writing with vivid verbs: Rather than relying on adverbs, which can be overused and dilute the impact of your writing, opt for descriptive verbs that vividly convey action.

Why it works: Descriptive verbs add depth and energy to your writing, creating a more immersive experience for the reader. They paint a clearer picture and evoke a stronger emotional response.

8. Make your sentences flow: A well-structured sentence is the backbone of coherent writing. Achieving flow involves attention to contractions, punctuation, and the incorporation of vivid details.

Why it works: Flowing sentences enhance the readability of your writing, ensuring that readers can effortlessly follow the narrative. Proper punctuation and vivid details contribute to a more engaging and enjoyable reading experience.

9. Inject your personality into your writing: Your writing style is an extension of your personality. Express yourself authentically by incorporating your unique phrases, slang (within reason), and relevant personal anecdotes.

Why it works: Readers connect more deeply with authentic and relatable content. Infusing your personality into your writing creates a distinctive and memorable style.

10. Read aloud: Perfecting your first draft is a step-by-step process. Reading aloud or editing on paper helps you identify areas for improvement in terms of cadence, rhythm, and overall coherence.

Why it works: Reading aloud allows you to hear the natural flow of your words, making it easier to spot awkward phrasing or inconsistencies. Editing on paper provides a different perspective, helping you catch errors that might be overlooked on a screen.

In Conclusion, writing is a skill that can be honed through practical strategies and a commitment to continuous improvement. Give these tips a try, and I'm confident you'll witness a positive transformation in your writing. Happy writing!

Cheers,

Joyce.
