How would your family rate your performance at home?

How would your family rate your performance at home?

“I have a child and he has a soccer game in 20 minutes, If he’s late, he won’t get the trophy. And since I’m in here with you, he’ll probably be late. Gentlemen, if you’re smart, you’ll want me as much for my dedication and ability as for the fact that I am going to ditch you right now and I am going to run like hell across town so that my kid knows that what matters to me most is him. And, Mr. Leland, your real grounds for firing me should be if I were to stay here with you.”

Movie “One Fine Day”

I remember watching this awesome movie “One Fine Day” couple of months back in Netflix and these words spoken by Melanie Parker (portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer) is something I can never forget…

By the way, do you like this movie quote?

#WorkLifeBalance

One of the standard questions I get whenever I address a group of women in any forum is “how do you balance your work and life?”…sometimes men also ask this question ??

“I don’t” is my standard answer…

Performance Appraisals at home?

Imagine we have Annual Performance Appraisals at home…for some of us who are obsessed with work, think about what our rating will be at home?

I would have been fired from my job (as a wife and mother) many years back if only we had appraisal system at home…

if my family had to do performance appraisal for me, and if I ask them to rate me on a scale of 1-5 as per the criteria below, I am absolutely confident that my rating will be just “1”- “Needs Improvement”

5 - Outstanding Performance
4 - Exceeds Expectation
3 - Good Performance
2 - Meets Expectations
1 - Needs Improvement

I won’t even qualify for “Meets Expectations”. Apart from giving me a rating of “1”, my family would be very much willing to work with me on a PIP (“Performance Improvement Plan”) and will be happy to let me go if I don’t show improvement within the designated time frame.

How would your family rate you?

"So on this #IWD2020, I promise to work on improving my performance at home"…is what you thought I would have told my family…Sorry. I am not in the habit of making promises which I don’t intend to fulfil ??...also after careful consideration, my family now feels that I am better off being with my laptop than being with them ??... and they also feel that working on a PIP for me is a waste of effort. However they have graciously agreed to let me live with them for which I am truly grateful ??.

ok ok..…I agree…I cannot advice anyone on work life balance... but you cannot stop me from admiring the women who are capable of integrating work and life and managing both successfully.

Hats off ladies!!!. You are great, yes you are

  • Irrespective of whatever role you play (daughter, wife, daughter-in-law, mother, mother-in-law, employee, consultant, entrepreneur etc. etc…)
  • irrespective of whether you get the recognition or not
  • irrespective of whether you are successful or not (currently)

I truly and honestly admire you; respect you; envy you and proud of being one among you

On this #WomensDay, Let us remember what Eleanor Roosevelt said “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”

Wishing you all a very happy International Women’s Day!!!

Great blog. As usual straight from your heart. Frank, hard hitting and calling a spade a spade. No beating around the bush. And more importantly no preaching from the ivory towers.? Continue doing your work from the trenches.? World is full of inequalities. There is no monetisation of the work done by hundreds and thousands happily and willingly in terms of caring, cooking and cleaning. Since this data is not captured in the GDP statistics, we care too hoots for this type of work.? But we don't realize is unlike all other animals including kangaroos we human beings require the three Cs in the first five years of our life and at the fag end of our life that too from another human being. Let us respect the work done by such people and let us also respect the concept of diginity of labour.
