How working together can resolve conflict around change

At OPDC over the years, we are increasingly finding our clients in the midst of multiple essential and fundamental changes, not just continuous improvement.

With the best of intent, even where individual business changes have been well planned, multiple changes at the same time can have conflicting objectives and become misaligned, confusing for the workforce, and stressful.

In fact, our snapshot poll showed few organisations get it right when delivering major change projects.

As a result, the cost of these changes runs high: time is taken away from the business to resolve differences, emotions can be intensified, errors occur – along with the blame that accompanies them when people are stressed - and it takes a toll on people’s physical and mental health.

Usually, no single person or small team, however senior, has the answer to solve the complex disconnects, re-align and prioritise the projects. Yet we have often found that the community of people involved in these complex multiple change programmes can generate practical solutions, clarify misunderstandings and find ways forward.?

Working with this community, from all functions and from the most senior to the most junior of positions, for two days in the midst of complex multiple business changes, with strong joint planning and then designing well-managed follow-ups, has helped to surface tensions, enable everyone to see the end goals and to understand the impact their actions have on other areas of the business.?Because the most senior people are present and engaged, decisions are fast-tracked, bottlenecks unblocked, and people of all levels leave with a clarity and new energy.?

Events like these are also diagnostic: they reveal the real movers and shakers who get things done and are willing to take responsibility to drive through particular initiatives in the weeks and months ahead.?These are the people who can be engaged to help get these complex multiple business changes over the line.

In our facilitation of these events, we bring not only our understanding and experience of helping businesses to plan in advance best practice ways of leading change for significant individual changes, but also our skills in enabling people to talk truth to power, resolve differences and move forward together.
