Working from home while home schooling isn't easy.
However, millions of working parents are facing this sudden challenge due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.
I've often enjoyed hearing the sound, "Daddy, I need help".
But after a week of home schooling during the virus outbreak, I hear it so many times a day, it's starting to cause me to cringe.
Fortunately, there are several success strategies you can use to:
? Make working from home and home schooling much easier.
? Get ahead at work and propel your kid's education forward.
? Discover the meaning and joy during this chaos.
- Establish a success mindset - You may need to dig deep to establish a "get to" vs "have to" point of view. It's pretty easy to get angry or bitter about this situation. You essentially have another person vying for your time during working hours. Before it was just your boss, customers, and coworkers. Now, your kids are in the mix, too. Recognize "this too shall pass", so use this opportunity in a positive way.
- Create a daily routine/schedule - You can alleviate a lot of stress by creating a schedule for each day, so everyone knows when working hours begin and end. Also include times for meals, recess, play time, etc...
- Schedule working hours for everyone - Create a work cycle for everyone in the house in the morning. This may require prep time for you to help line up your work needs and your kid’s work. It's worth it to have a few solid hours of uninterrupted time each day.
- Clarify expectations with your employer and customers - One of the bright spots about this pandemic is that it's impacting EVERYONE. No need to act like it's business as usual. Let them know that you're working to get the job done while taking care of your family. They will understand the need for some flexibility.
- Use a virtual baby sitter - Even though you may not have access to an in-person babysitter, you can get a relative or friend to engage with your kid on Skype or Zoom, while you take care of work. You can even this person to read a story or help them with their homework.
- Create a game plan for big meetings - If you have an important presentation or meeting that must not get interrupted, create a pre-game plan. For example, save that big movie or new toy for a time when you need to avoid interruptions all cost.
- Give yourself something to look forward to - In the afternoon schedule recess. Make this an outdoor activity; but also have a list of indoor options, too.
- Work it out with your partner - Not everyone has a partner or bigger kid in the house to help out; but if you do, make sure to engage them. Strategize your schedules so you can trade off work time with home school time.
Now, choose one of the strategies above, and try it in your work schedule today.
