A number of years ago, I received a very interesting article…?
“Joshua, can you tell me about your daily routine? How many hours each day do you spend in the office? How many hours with your family?”?
The email was from an acquaintance of mine (who would later become a dear friend and mentor).?
He went on to explain that he was working on a keynote speech and wanted to highlight the value of putting in your 10,000 hours to reach mastery.?
Over the previous 5 years, I had come from zero to providing marketing consulting and writing services for companies such as Google, Verizon, St. Judes, Sony, and many others. He wanted to know my path to success.?
I hit reply…?
“I don’t think you’ll like my answer very much, but here it is…?
I get up at around 5am. Work until 8am and have breakfast and scripture study with my family. Then I hit business again until around 1 or 2 pm and then spend the rest of the day with my family.?
The fact is, time invested in my family life returns huge dividends of happiness, peace, and productivity for me. I simply function way better and get things done much faster.”?
As predicted, he didn’t really like the answer - since the thrust of his message was the need to sacrifice everything and pay the price for success.?
He’s probably right, but maybe we simply had a different definition of success.?
Years later he told me that, while he was worth hundreds of millions, he would gladly give much of it up for better family relationships.?
Success is not always about money… but the truth is, there’s no need to give up one for the other.?
