HAPPY FAMILY DAY long weekend! I know it is a regional holiday and not everyone is having a long weekend but it is still a good idea to connect with your family this weekend and let them know you are thinking of them and feel lucky to have them in your life. Or maybe a good time to forgive and repair a damaged relationship with a family member you have not connected with in a while? Which ever way you feel...
This week, I’d like to share a story with you that I’ve heard countless times. I first encountered it as a child, and it’s one of those stories that never loses its impact. It’s a great one, so keep reading or watch the video — I think you’ll love it.
The story is about a dog owner who had two dogs: one black and one beige. Every week, he would take his dogs to a dog race event. Both dogs were fast and talented racers. At each event, the owner would bet on one of his dogs to win. Interestingly, regardless of which dog he bet on, that dog would always win. This intrigued the people around him, as there was money involved, and many others were placing bets as well. Sometimes the beige dog won, and other times the black dog did. It seemed unpredictable—except to the owner, who always knew exactly which dog would win.
Curiosity got the better of people, and they started asking him, “How do you know which dog is going to win? It’s fascinating because one of your dogs wins every week, but it’s never the same one. You train both of them, so how can you be so sure?” Week after week, his predictions proved correct, and people kept pressing him for an explanation.
Finally, the owner revealed his secret. He said, “It’s simple. I bet on the dog I’ve been feeding all week.”
This story is powerful because it serves as a metaphor for our minds. Which dog are you feeding in your own head? What are you telling yourself? What expectations are you setting for your thoughts and actions? Are you feeding the dog of negativity, the one that says, “The whole world is against me,” or “I’ll never accomplish anything in my life,” or “Everything is too hard”? Perhaps it’s the “I’m terrible with technology” dog that you’ve been nurturing.
Or, are you feeding the other dog? The one that says, “You know what? I can do this. I used to struggle with technology, but now I’m learning how to improve. I used to neglect my health, but now I’m taking steps to prioritize it. I’ve accomplished so much in the past, and I know I can do it again. I’m willing to put in the work to grow my business. I’m ready to have that tough conversation with my teenage daughter. I’m capable and determined.”
So, which dog are you feeding? Be intentional about your choice. Maybe it’s time to stop feeding the dog that drags you down altogether. The one that holds you back and keeps you stuck. Instead, focus on feeding the dog that empowers you, uplifts you, and propels you forward. That’s how you keep winning, every single time.
