How (& Why) Wellbeing Became a “Thing”

Workplace wellness evolved over the years to cover much more than just physical health and wellness. I entered the industry in 2016 to bring fitness and wellness to busy professionals who need it the most in the workplace. Over the first two years of my career, I learned that people need additional support to manage the overwhelm of life before they can even consider a fitness program.?
After six years of being in the industry, I will share my best thinking on why wellbeing became a thing:?
Addressing financial health:?
Employers provide compensation, benefits, and many other perks for their employees. When the idea of wellness programs comes around, employers may feel they need to address simple things like budgeting, saving, and retirement options the company provides before diving into full wellness programs. When things like finances and fitness can be tied together to an annual strategy, the more appropriate term is wellbeing, as it encompasses whole person health, outside of just physical.?
Fitness isn’t for everyone:?
To be frank, before having a wife and kids, I didn’t really understand why people couldn’t just ‘work out’ to reduce stress and stay physically fit. I now know the complexities of life, motivation, and personal health all play a huge role in someone's ability to exercise and stay physically fit. Focusing on stress reduction, nutrition, mental health, and improving wellbeing outside of fitness is a must for your company. A focus on just physical health will be a turn off for a subset of your population.?
Overwhelm = poor health:?
Our minds and bodies tend to turn against us in times of stress and overwhelm. Lack of motivation, food cravings, and TV binges are often thrown our way when things get too heavy to handle at work or home. Finding ways to educate and employ anti-overwhelm strategies in the office allows us the extra bandwidth needed to get to things like a quick workout, financial planning, or something as simple as prepping and cooking the next family meal.?
Workplace movement and fitness are still at the forefront of what we do. However, addressing the above within an annual wellbeing program is also essential. Balancing both helps us capture the broader engagement of your group while addressing areas that drive employee retention, health, and overall wellbeing of the organization.?
