Networking is a word that often sparks anxiety, especially for those of us who only engage in it when we “have” to. If this sounds like you, you’re not alone. Recently, I was impacted by a workforce reduction and reached out to about 200 people in my LinkedIn network to let them know I was open to work. The response was overwhelming: incredible messages of support poured in. This experience reminded me how valuable networking is, not just in times of need, but as an ongoing practice.
Let’s explore how and why to network, with tips to help even the most reluctant of us get started.
Reframe Networking in Your Mind
The first step to better networking is shifting your mindset. Instead of seeing networking as a transactional or opportunistic exercise, think of it as building genuine relationships.
Focus on Giving
Approach networking with a spirit of generosity: “How can I help?” rather than “What can I get?”. When you show genuine interest in others and seek to provide value, connections become more meaningful and lasting.
Know Your Goals
What do you want to achieve from networking? Being clear about your objectives can help you approach it with purpose. Here are some common goals:
1.??? Job Opportunities: Find your next career move.
2.??? Mentorship: Learn from seasoned professionals.
3.??? Professional Growth: Expand your circle in your industry.
4.??? Learning and Development: Gain access to workshops, seminars, and training.
5.??? Collaboration: Discover potential partners for projects or ventures.
6.??? Personal Growth: Broaden your perspective by hearing new stories.
7.??? Community Building: Connect with like-minded individuals.
8.??? Visibility and Influence: Establish yourself as a thought leader.
9.??? Support System: Build a network of trusted professionals for advice and encouragement.
Practical Steps to Start Networking
1. Prepare an Elevator Pitch
Have a short, concise introduction ready about who you are, what you do, and what excites you. This makes introductions smoother and helps you appear confident.
2. Attend Events
Seek out industry conferences, meetups, or seminars. These are excellent places to meet people with similar interests and goals.

3. Leverage social media
Platforms like LinkedIn are powerful tools for networking. Engage with posts, share valuable content, and reach out with personalized messages.
4. Follow Up
After meeting someone, send a follow-up email or message. Thank them for their time and express interest in staying connected.
Tips to Build Confidence
Networking can feel intimidating, but confidence grows with practice. Here’s how to ease into it:
·???????? Start Small: Practice in low-stakes environments, like with friends or colleagues.
·???????? Be Curious: Ask open-ended questions like, “What inspired you to get into this field?” or “What challenges are you working on now?”
·???????? Listen Actively: Follow the 80/20 rule—let them talk 80% of the time.
Build a Consistent Networking Habit
Consistency is key. Schedule time each week to connect with your network—whether it’s congratulating someone on an achievement, commenting on a post, or attending an event. Over time, these small actions compound into meaningful relationships.
·???????? Diversify Your Network: Connect with people from different industries and backgrounds.
·???????? Stay Authentic: Be genuine in your interactions. Authenticity strengthens relationships.
Learn and Reflect
To continually improve your networking skills, seek inspiration and feedback:
·???????? Read Books: “Never Eat Alone” by Keith Ferrazzi and “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie are excellent starting points.
·???????? Watch Videos: TED Talks on networking and communication can offer practical tips.
·???????? Reflect: After each networking interaction, think about what went well and where you can improve.
·???????? Ask for Feedback: A trusted mentor or friend can provide valuable insights.
The Why Behind Networking
Networking isn’t just about advancing your career or finding opportunities. It’s about building a web of connections that enrich your life in many ways. A strong network can offer support during challenging times, help you grow personally and professionally, and even inspire you to achieve more than you thought possible.
By shifting your mindset, setting clear goals, and practicing regularly, networking can transform from something you dread into something you enjoy. And who knows? The connections you build today could lead to incredible opportunities tomorrow.
Start small, stay consistent, and focus on authenticity. You’ve got this! (and so do I!)
