"NOT HOW, WHO?" | Are you your own worst enemy?

One of my very early mentors, Dan Sullivan, taught me this crucial lesson that is just as relevant in our lives as it is in our businesses and is more important NOW than it’s ever been.

When you have a dream, a goal, a vision for your life and/or your business, it can be exciting but it can also get hugely frustrating when you feel you’re just not getting there as quickly as you’d like.

There seem to be SO many things you need and need to learn...

? Branding

? Logo design 

? Website

? Social media

? Advertising

? Marketing

? Accounting 

? Sales

And, all that is likely to be added to the myriad stuff you have to do in your personal life too...

?? School runs

?? DIY

?? Shopping

?? Cooking

?? Parent caring...add infinitum 

So, when you hit a block, something you don’t know how to do, what do you think? If you’re anything like I was when I first started out in business, I would get overwhelmed and I’d ask myself “How am I supposed to do that?” “How can I learn how to do that?” “How long will it take me to do that?” I would set about trying to learn new skills as cheaply as I could (this usually involved watching hours and hours of YouTube videos), in an attempt to save money. BUT, here’s the thing...

I was COSTING myself a fortune!! Not only did I try to learn so many things that I wasn’t completing the learning in ANY area, but I was getting MORE frustrated and MORE overwhelmed. Worse than that though, I was getting further and further away from my dreams and my goals.

Then I met Dan and he asked me, “What do you do when your car breaks down?” Of course I said “I take it to a mechanic.” “Why don’t you fix it yourself?” he asked. The penny dropped right there and then. I knew my skill set. I knew what I was meant to do. I knew my purpose. I had a big dream and yet here I was spending my time and energy on things that were NOT my skill set and, in the process, keeping myself from doing what I was meant to! Go figure

From that moment on, the first thing I ask myself when I hit a knowledge or skill block or when I know my time will be better spent living my purpose is “WHO?” Who has the knowhow, knowledge and skills to get this done for me competently and quickly so that I can do what I do?”

DO NOT let money be the issue, or money WILL become an issue. Believe me, I truly know how that can hold you back BUT when you get the right help, it gets you where you need to be in your business QUICKER and BETTER EQUIPPED so that you can make your investment back!!! THE best investment you can make when you’re stuck in your business is in professional help. AND, once you get the hang of this in your business, transfer it to other areas of your life and see it transform things for you. Doe instance, the very first thing I advise, particularly my female clients to do is get a cleaner! As a business owner, not only do you need to clear headspace and conserve your energy, but you need to know your value. A business owner is a VERY expensive cleaner! 

So, next time you get stuck, instead of asking “How?” practice asking “Who?”
