How we've been preparing for this moment
All year, our newsroom has been preparing for these next few days. Reporting with and for immigrants is core to Documented’s mission, regardless of who is in office, but we know this election is incredibly high stakes for immigrants. Our community correspondent, Rommel H. Ojeda , recently surveyed 170 readers in our Spanish-language WhatsApp channel to gauge asylum seekers' fears and concerns. The responses channeled the disconnect that many immigrants are feeling: “Why is there so much hate against immigrants when they are really important for the country?”
Our top priority has been serving our core audience of immigrant New Yorkers with critical information about what to expect. In the past several months, our reporters analyzed how a Harris or Trump presidency could affect asylum seekers, Temporary Protected Status holders, DACA recipients, and the U.S.-Mexico Border – and translated those guides into Spanish, Chinese, and Haitian Kreyol so readers who need this information know what to expect.?
We also understand that immigrants aren’t just affected by elections – they’re often voters that will be making their voices heard at the ballot box. We’re making sure they know how through our multilingual guides on first-time voting and this year’s ballot questions.?
And for policymakers, nonprofit and government workers and New Yorkers who want to understand the perspectives of all our communities: our team is also spotlighting groups on the ground activating Asian and Caribbean voters in New York City and lifting up their concerns through ongoing community reporting and polls.?
At a time like this, information is a precious resource. Our team of journalists are proud to fulfill this critical mission, never more so than now.
