How We’re Using AI and Machine Learning to Transform Healthcare
Introduction
The healthcare tech landscape is changing fast. What makes Deep Medical stand out is a revolutionary approach to combining AI and machine learning that enables AI models to learn from each other.?
What does that mean in practice? It means that we’re able to predict when patients are at risk of missing appointments with incredible accuracy - without accessing medical records - giving clinics time to reschedule, or move another patient off the waiting list and into that missed appointment.?
Here’s how we use AI and machine learning to improve patient attendance, reduce clinic waiting lists - and ultimately drive more equitable access to healthcare.
AI profiling, personalising and measuring
In our approach, AI models don't just operate in isolation - they learn from each other.?
Put simply, we use different forms of AI that stack on top of each other, creating a synergy that enables deeper insights into patient behaviour and needs.?
What that means is that one AI model might be profiling aspects of what makes a patient likely to miss their appointment, whilst the other one is engaging and measuring how individually that patient might communicate or respond.
When you bring these two models together, they can work out how an individual patient is likely to act.?
This combination of profiling and measuring, facilitated by interconnected models that learn from each other, forms the basis of what we term AI profiling, personalising, and measuring.
It’s a new, complex and smart way of applying AI that’s poised to revolutionise how clinics communicate and engage with their patients.?
AI models working together
Traditionally, machine learning has been confined to building singular models. Our approach leverages the outcomes of one model to inform the construction of another.?
This iterative process not only enhances accuracy, it also enables us to make more informed decisions without compromising patient privacy. By accurately identifying individuals likely to miss appointments, we’re empowering healthcare providers to make better scheduling decisions.?
Patient engagement is improved too. If clinics can better anticipate patient behaviour, they can engage more effectively with patients, perhaps using technology like Cisco and Uber to communicate with them, and transport them to their appointment.?

Tech isn’t always the answer. Our models can help identify clinical vulnerabilities in patients, so clinical teams can intervene proactively to contact and work with those patients.
Ethical AI and data usage
Key to our success is the ethical design and implementation of our AI models.?
We prioritise local data for training our models in order to ensure cultural nuances and individual diversity are preserved. And by constantly refreshing our AI models with the latest data, we mitigate the risk of ‘model drift’ (the decay of models' predictive power as a result of the changes in real world environments).
We consider all aspects of an individual's life, from socioeconomic status to looking at their distance from (and their means of transport to) the hospital, ensuring our solutions are comprehensive and equitable.
In addition, we maintain a control proportion of data to establish a baseline. We don’t engage with this data, meaning we’re safeguarding against biased outcomes.?
Ethical AI is a guiding principle for us, and one of our core values. We're committed to deploying our technology responsibly, focusing on enhancing access rather than restricting it.?
Our models are designed not to cancel appointments for patients, but to optimise clinical? scheduling and improve accessibility for all, particularly those facing barriers to accessing healthcare.?
In an age of AI, we’re putting patients first.?
At Deep Medical our mission is to reduce health inequality by cutting waiting lists and helping more patients access care. And we're using AI to help us.
The cost of missed appointments to the NHS is huge -? £1.2 billion annually. But there’s a human cost too.
That's why understanding and supporting each patient behind these missed appointments is essential in our journey towards reducing waiting lists and building health equity.
