How we’re showing up for sustainability at NTT

At NTT, we’ve made it our mission to use technology for good. Tracing back to our roots, our technology innovations have always considered the broader impact, and we strive to deliver innovation and tech-based solutions as we work towards a sustainable world. We do this with a passion that’s evident in every corner of our company. ?

Sustainability at NTT isn’t about ticking boxes or token gestures, but focuses on our impact in action It’s about real action with initiatives, commitments and employee-driven campaigns that make an impact by minimizing it.

We encourage our employees to actively participate in creating a more sustainable world. Here we listen to some of their personal reflections on what sustainability means in their own lives and how NTT empowers them to live with a sustainable mindset.?

We choose to champion our planet

‘‘NTT is demonstrating its commitment to making a difference through our actions and not just words - and it’s our hope that we’re becoming a driving force in influencing other companies to improve in this area, too.’ says Georgina Turner, ANZ Environmental Sustainability Officer at NTT.??

‘To begin with, we’ve made a very public commitment to being a UN ally, specifically by lowering our CO2 levels.’ As Georgina explains, ‘Our recent pledge to move to carbon-neutral and 100% renewable energy has taken it to the next level.’ In fact, we’re aiming to power our Global Data Centre Division – an operation of almost 600,000 sq. m. across 20 countries and regions – with 100% renewable energy by 2030.’?

Chitralekha Kalmady Associate Director - Culture, Diversity and Sustainability tells us, ‘I’m incredibly proud to be part of a company committed to a carbon neutral future. We do this through our very focused initiatives around Connected Economy, Connected Planet and Connected Communities that together create a hugely positive impact on several UNSDGs.’

Every employee has a part to play and can make an impact in our Connected Economy.

Our economies are driven by profits, so we face a huge dilemma: how do we link the need for increasing profits with climate regeneration? To start with, each of us matters!??

‘I’m proud that I work for a company that actively encourages me to do the small to break the hyper-consumption cycle that is slowly killing our communities and planet. I’m also empowered to make sustainable choices that matter, like working remotely and giving up travel to name a few.’ Andreea Ciurea, Services Manager in Europe tells us.??

Stephen Kelley VP Managed Services in the UK and Ireland, goes on, ‘Every employee has three days volunteering leave to give back and contribute to their community. As a UKI business, we launched a Sustainability Tribe, attracting volunteers from across the business. So far, we’ve done a virtual walk from Dublin to Moscow raising €4,000 for charity, and an ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ initiative with over 800 people on board (NTT planted a thousand trees as a reward for the efforts). The stories of the impact these activities made to individuals who were really struggling demonstrated how every small step can make a big difference.’?

Bringing our pledge to life with meaningful community initiatives that have a real impact?

‘Our Girls School in India education initiative really speaks to our pledge of putting ‘Connected Communities in action. It makes me feel proud that our company uses technology to make lives better across the world. Our continuous efforts towards educating young girls from underprivileged communities is an initiative I’m particularly passionate about,’ says Priyanka Rohilla: Senior PR Manager in Asia Pacific.????

‘NTT is ensuring we leave a positive mark on the planet, through providing access to digital educational platforms for schools in under-privileged communities around the region.’ adds Natalie Munemo, MEA Sustainability and Diversity Director. For Natalie, our Technical Accelerate Programme TAP in MEA stands out. ‘It aims to break the digital divide and gender gaps in ICT across Middle East and Africa. We’re providing quality technical education and accelerated work experience to diverse groups of youth from various communities, while aiming to create sustainable and inclusive employment as a result.’?

Madeleine Bulbeck, Senior Service Delivery Manager, agrees that our educational equality initiatives are a point of particular pride. ‘Improving education for underprivileged communities, and in particular underprivileged women, is especially resonant for me. In addition to the projects Natalie and Priyanka mentioned, we’re also providing, resources for a Saturday school in South Africa and an online education module for a remote location in Canada!’

The truth is that, as Iria Fernandez, Service Transition Specialist, puts it, ‘NTT has great human capital, so we can have a big impact and make a contribution that matters. We really do have the opportunity to transform human potential at scale here at NTT.’??

‘Moreover’, Georgina wraps things up by saying, ‘It has also been incredible to see the enthusiasm from our clients and employees - they’re all keen to see how they can do their part!’?
