How we’re embedding sustainability into everything we do at Sage

Sage was this year named one of TIME ’s World’s Most Sustainable Companies, ranking top in the UK — a testament to how deeply invested we are in being a sustainable organisation.

For us, sustainability goes beyond simply being a business priority. We’ve taken an approach we call ‘Sustainability by Design,’ which is about integrating sustainability deep into our business and operations. It’s not just about meeting standards, but integrating these considerations into everything we do at Sage, from the products we build to the processes and policies that support how we operate.

We have an ambition to build a more sustainable future for all of our stakeholders — from our colleagues to our customers — and we know that we can only do this by making Sage a resilient, sustainable business. By making ourselves Sustainable by Design, we're delivering on our Sustainability and Society strategy, and positioning ourselves strategically to achieve our ambitions. By putting sustainability at the heart of everything that we do, we’re truly living up to our corporate purpose: to knock down barriers so that everyone can thrive.

Sustainability by Design is underpinned by three pillars: Protect the Planet, our commitment to taking action within our business, with our customers, and with our suppliers to tackle climate change; Tech for Good, which is how we help empower SMBs to thrive; and Human by Design, our dedication to growing sustainably by building a diverse, human-centred culture.

Each of these three pillars is supported by clear priorities, an action plan and an approach that drives accountability across Sage. It’s really important to us that we are not only a sustainable, people-first employer, but also a business that SMBs and the wider society can depend on. We truly believe that it’s our responsibility to create change, to make an impact, and to act as a role model for our industry and for those in our network.

This means that each and every Sage colleague has an important role to play in supporting us to reach our goals. After all, our commitment to breaking down barriers so that people can thrive starts with our colleagues. We actively encourage our teams to give back to their community: from day one, every team member is given five paid days each year to volunteer for causes they care about and is invited to join colleague-led support groups as well as programmes that support entrepreneurs around the world. In the previous financial year, our colleagues spent an impressive 140,956 hours volunteering collectively.
