How The Weather Affects Corrugated Packaging?

Have you ever noticed a box's discoloration after leaving it out in the sun for several days? Or have you ever noticed how cardboard can weaken when exposed to moisture? Everyone has probably experienced receiving a carton box that has been in the rain or is really moist and barely holding together.

The truth is that changing weather conditions can readily alter and affect corrugated boxes. These effects can also be felt in the heat and humidity, not just when it rains. Corrugated fiber board usually sustains damage to both the physical structure and the glue holding it together when it is exposed to any friendly environment that promotes the growth of bacteria and moisture. This inevitably affects the way your package materials can seem, feel, and continue to be structurally solid.

This article will concentrate on the changes that occur in high humidity, cold, dry settings, as well as those that are exposed to direct sunshine, on cardboard packing.

How Corrugated Sheet? Is Affected by Humidity

High humidity causes internal moisture in corrugated sheet, which directly affects the durability of corrugated boxes like shipping cartons and mailer boxes.

What causes this to occur? Since corrugated board?are made from wood fibers, the wood's inherent ability to absorb moisture when conducting transpiration is preserved even after the cardboard has undergone extensive chemical treatment. Because of this, cardboard has a great capacity for moisture absorption by nature.

According to the map above, locations closest to warmer bodies of water had the highest humidity levels. High humidity places include, among others, China, Southeast Asia, and the Eastern United States. This indicates that the air has more moisture, which will have a greater impact on the structure of cardboard. In addition to compromising structural integrity, cardboard with a high moisture content makes it harder to dry paints and inks because moisture increases viscosity.

Due to ideas like relative humidity (RH) and stacking strength, humidity plays a crucial role in packing. When compared to the amount of moisture present in the air naturally, relative humidity is different from normal humidity. The cardboard's original stacking strength is reduced to 80% at 50% RH. Due to the high humidity throughout the summer, maintaining packing and deliveries is the most challenging.

In container cases production, when we find that the moisture content of the carton is too high, we usually recommend that it be matched with a drying unit to achieve better production results.

How Cool & Dry Weather Impacts Corrugated Sheet

The next situation to be aware of is how cardboard responds in cool, dry weather as opposed to hot, humid weather. In general, cardboard loses its strength and compression as the temperature rises. However, in drier, colder regions, the biggest issue with cardboard is that the material is more fragile and prone to tears and cracks in the paper or cardboard.

When cardboard is kept in excessively dry conditions for a long time, the extreme deficiency in moisture causes the sheet?to behave like a sponge that has been completely dried out. It becomes incredibly rigid and brittle, making it more difficult to fold paper into a box without running the danger of it tearing or cracking.

For instance, when folding a carton?box, the excessively dry area?of cardboard may cause cracks to form along the fold lines.

During the production of box?forming, In?order to prevent this situation, there are also humidifiers on the market in flexo printing slotting and die?cutting machines.

Conclusion

In short, in the production process of carton boxes, we need to adjust the solution according to the actual environment and cardboard conditions, And the selection of mechanical configuration also needs to be matched according to actual needs. In the process of carton manufacturing, the rational matching and use of machinery can be better?to improve product quality and production efficiency.

Very illustrative! That is why we add a "Safety Factor" based on Fatigue (Storage time), Humidity, Stacking Pattern and Pallet Overhanging, besides Handling Losses!
