How we are reshaping corporate culture and not asking for your permission.

How we are reshaping corporate culture and not asking for your permission.

You may have probably seen us coming in to submit our internship letters, that new management trainee. We are the new flock of sheep entering into the workspace. If someone ever told you that all your corporate emails would be searchable by anyone at the company you would have said it's a lie, but look at you now. With tech companies fastly springing up in silicon valley, companies like Slack, Zoom, and Hangouts have features that allow all business correspondence public and searchable within a company.

If you still do not know us, let me help. We are most likely that generation that is always on the phone, on the bus, when eating, in parties, always excited to record that video, update our Instagram feed or check for the next trending story. Like it or not we are the up-and-coming generation that’s going to shape the workplaces of tomorrow and you need us.

By about 2025, nearly half the working population will be composed of Genz, and individuals within my generation will be starting and managing their own companies more frequently. We have started already anyway!

Our Culture.

There is a significant difference between us and you. You went for the money when you carried your certificates looking for a job and said an emphatic YES! to the job that came with the highest pay but that is not us.

The truth is, we care about the money but it is beyond that, we are looking for value, relationship, a sense of family and it goes beyond just working for this sort of companies, also the ones we buy from.

If your recruiting efforts, does not shift towards building this culture, you might as well say goodbye to the best candidates amongst us.

  • Diversity and Inclusion

Discrimination is so '90s and no one should be subjected to any form of marginalisation because of their individual preferences. More than any other generation, we consider ourselves politically independent, and interested in a wide variety of different nations, cultures, ideas, and beliefs. We care for companies that offer the same opportunities to men and women. That’s why, increasingly, Genz’s are flocking to companies with better diversity and inclusion programs.

  • Work-Life Balance

What we want a healthy work-life balance, an environment that prioritizes the health and happiness of its workers—even if it means giving up a bit of pay. Such as flexible hours, flexible vacation time, personal time, and an appreciation for personal needs. It may also include working from home. If you want us to sacrifice everything for the company, your company is probably not going to survive because this generation wants to 'live'.

  • Feedback and Growth

Speaking of growth. No, we are not going to wait 5 years to get promoted because 'that is the way it is done here' Genz’s workers are demanding for growth both in corporate and individual contexts. In general, we want more feedback on our performances, in part because we want the affirmation, and in part, because we want to keep learning and improving.

  • Corporate Social Responsibility

Giving back to the community is important to us. We are either fighting for climate change, speaking against police brutality or picking litter by the roadside.

Genz’s are willing to spend more with brands that support causes they care about. A brand’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs are the best place to develop these initiatives.

Here is the bottom line, do not underestimate us and our undying commitment to solving the problem we face in the workspace and the society at large. We are prepared to stand up for what we believe in, regardless of the cost and we are definitely not leaving this country the same way you handed it over to us.
