How We Go

How We Go

Culture-Centric Leadership --- High-Functioning Enterprise

Introduction:

I love Hawaii!?The pristine white sand beaches and comforting warm sun.?The calming island breeze, blowing through the palm trees.?The lush green vegetation, sprinkled with brilliant tropical flowers.?I love relaxing on the beach with a good book while the rhythmic crashing of the waves lulls every worry away.

When I was young, my family moved to the North Shore of Oahu, where I attended Kahuku High and Intermediate School.?The Hawaiian culture was new to me, but I quickly learned to appreciate it.?The people of Hawaii have a very distinct way of talking, and one of my favorite phrases from Hawaiian culture is “we go.”

I still remember the first time one of my new friends said, “Come, Joshua!?We go to da beach.”

“We go” is more than an offer to follow along; it’s an invitation to belong.?It’s an expression of fellowship and unity.?It means you’re wanted, accepted, respected, and appreciated.?Nothing makes me feel more connected than “we go.”

There seem to be hundreds of descriptions of what culture is.?For me, culture is “How We Go.”?It’s how we go from here to there, from where we are to where we want to be.?It’s how we go about our work and how we go from mediocre to exceptional.?It’s how we go from opposing strategies to a united purpose.?It’s how we go from divided to connected.

In Hawaii, it’s called the spirit of aloha.?At Disney, it’s called magic.?Whatever you choose to call it, the value of a thriving, healthy culture is undeniable.?

Simple and deep.?That’s how I would describe How We Go.?It’s a simple yet deep approach to developing leadership behaviors that will enable you to steer your organization’s culture.?It’s not a long-winded, overly academic dissertation full of empty jargon and unproven theories.?It’s a discussion of actionable concepts that turn common sense into common behavior.?

How We Go applies the depth of neuroscience and organizational psychology to the environment of everyday management.?How We Go is a no-nonsense, quickly actionable approach to culture-centric leadership.

The purpose of leadership is to bring people together.?The purpose of culture-centric leadership is to bring people together well.

This is How We Go.

"Simplicity is the universal key to doing more with less." "Today the most successful lodging company in the world owns no lodging real estate. The most successful taxi service in the world owns no taxis. And, with the emerging remote work opportunities, it’s likely the most successful offices of the future will hold no office space. Organizations cling to the original way of doing things, stubbornly insisting that adding complexity is the only way to improve. But the reality is that every solution is only a partial and temporary one. And when various solutions compete, simplicity will always win. The complex organizations that own the industry will find themselves beat by simpler solutions. Improvement is accomplished by subtraction, not addition. You know you’ve achieved a great solution when you can honestly find nothing else to take away." "Simplicity concentrates value. Complexity dilutes it." ~ How We Go
