Ever since the BBC News Story went out on our van based working I have been asked a lot about how we get internet on the road - even in the middle of nowhere. So I thought I'd do a brief article on how it works...
Our set up consists of a router on the wall of the van on the inside that takes a normal SIM card - we have a variety of SIM cards in the van so we have different networks to chose from dependant on what works best wherever we are. We load them with data when they're in use which is pretty cost effective these days - for example, EE do unlimited data for £30.
The router is then connected through cables behind the wall/ceiling to an antenna box on the roof of the van. This box repeats and boost the mobile data signal giving a stronger and more reliable connection when compared to simply using your phone as a mobile hotspot. To highlight this - we have actually had a phone showing H+/3G but good quality 4G through the Wi-Fi system on the same network.

If anyone is interested we purchased the whole system from Motorhome WiFi (we have no affiliate scheme or anything so no agenda here). We went for the basic 4G compact system which works well for our 6m van and 2 people connecting. If you have a bigger van and more people one of the more premium systems might be preferable.
Installation is very easy - drill one hole in the roof with a threaded bolt to secure the antenna. The antenna self seals against the roof so no leaking. Motorhome WiFi will install it at a charge.
Hopefully this helps or gives inspiration to anyone looking to work on the road!

3 年Sounds like a great set up Liam! A bit more sophisticated than mine I think. I run a Netgear Nighthawk mobile router with EE unlimited sim and detachable antenna, with good results. No wiring, Back up rechargeable battery and portable. I use the same device at my Coworking Space, where line-of-sight to a nearby mast means the mobile speeds outstrip the cabled-in devices. Keep up the pioneering in all you do! You've inspired others already with your story. #LouthCoworking
