How we can support you with learning at work

This week is Learning at Work Week. Our careers advisers can help you explore ways to progress your career, including how to develop your skills through learning.

Here are three stories from people who came to the National Careers Service for support with upskilling and progression, leading to them pursuing learning and development.

Jonathan

Jonathan came to the National Careers Service for support with his career progression as a project manager. Jonathan completed a skills assessment with his adviser, which helped Jonathan to reflect on his skills, interests and motivations.

They then reviewed his CV and made improvements to tailor it more to the roles he was interested in. They also discussed using LinkedIn effectively and signing up to recruitment agencies.

Jonathan found that the National Careers Service appointment had challenged him to think about his priorities and what he wanted from a role. This prompted him to speak to his current employer about career progression and following this, he has progressed into managing a new large project. He has also started a management training course within the company to support future progression.

Anisa

Anisa is employed as a psychology assistant, and wanted support with how to progress further within her field of work.

Anisa's careers adviser worked with her on her interview skills and techniques, to prepare her for potential promotion. They also looked for learning and development opportunities, with Anisa signing up to a health and safety course to increase her knowledge in that area.

Since her appointment with the National Careers Service, Anisa has successfully progressed in her career through a promotion at her workplace, and is considering her future goals and what skills she needs to progress further.

Betsy

Betsy was ready to to progress in her career, and had an appointment with a National Careers Service careers adviser to explore ways to increase her skills. Through her careers adviser, Betsy enrolled on a team leading course?for learning and development, and completed employment workshops to develop skills.

Betsy's careers adviser also worked through interview techniques with her, including the STAR method, so Betsy would feel prepared when a progression opportunity came up.
