How we can create a Transdisciplinary Approach to Skills Development

One of the key messages emanating from the Second Education and Innovation Summit in Brussels last week was the need for academic disciplines to step out of their academic silos, challenge the boundaries of their disciplines and collaborate in order to develop new skills and innovation – a transdisciplinary collaborative approach to finding solutions to the technological and societal disruptions we have experienced over the last decade.

Creating a transdisciplinary approach to skills development and innovation requires an integration of knowledge and practices from multiple disciplines to provide learners with a holistic and comprehensive learning experience.? This approach recognises that many real-world challenges and opportunities require a combination of knowledge, skills, and expertise from various fields.

For educational institutions to create a transdisciplinary approach can be achieved by following a number of key steps:

  • Identify the target skills: Determine the key skills that you want to develop in your students and learners.? These skills can be technical, such as programming or data analysis, or soft skills such as communication or problem-solving.
  • Conduct a skills mapping exercise:? Analyse the target skills and identify the relevant disciplines or fields of knowledge associated with each skill.? For example, programming may involve some combination of computer science, mathematics, and software engineering.
  • Assemble a multi-disciplinary team: Bring together experts from different disciplines who can contribute to the development of the transdisciplinary approach.? This team should include educators, subject matter experts, and practitioners with diverse backgrounds.
