Personally I love interviews.
No, I’m not lying. Yes, I’m also a fan of networking. And no, I’m not a masochist.
Now that we’ve covered that…
Interviews are 50% about the content and 50% about your confidence. You can have great things to say, but if you say it in a way that doesn’t convey authority – welllllll, you might as well have said nothing at all.
Here are some ways to boost your confidence and channel your inner Beyonce for an interview:
PREPARE, PREPARE, PREPARE!
This seems like a no-brainer and a lot of you probably do prep. But! I’d encourage you to examine your routine.
- Are you just thinking through answers? Or are you writing them down?
- What about practicing your script out loud?
- How much time are you spending researching the company vs. knowing your experience?
My biggest piece of advice is to do multiple mock interviews with a friend, spouse or coach. Out loud. You’d be surprised at how hard (and awkward!) it is to go from thinking + writing your answers to actually saying them out loud. Get the jitters out BEFORE the interview so you can walk in like a boss.
MINDSET WILL MAKE OR BREAK IT
When I worked in sales at The Muse, there was a rep who crushed goals every month. We called him Showtime. (Actually, I think he called HIMSELF Showtime.) The one thing that he had that set him apart from the other reps was his confidence. You'd listen to him on the phone and you could just tell that he believed every word he said. With the confidence in himself and the product, he was in turn able to gain the confidence of the buyer and land the deal.

4 年Great read! Confidence goes so far with interviewing. My favorite part of the article was when you talked about not preparing up until the last possible minute. I used to print off the job description and read it in the lobby until my interviewer arrived. That was a great way to make myself even more nervous! Relaxing and thinking positive does wonders.?
