How Visual Storytelling brought Mosaic Hues’ Diverse Women’s Network Launch to life

Imagine walking into an event where every spoken word, shared idea, and heartfelt moment comes to life through vibrant illustrations on a big screen.

That was the magic of live event visual storytelling at the Diverse Women’s Network Launch!

When a visual storyteller like Indi from Indi Dust attends an event, they capture the narrative or essence of the event in real-time, creating live drawings on an iPad that are projected onto a large screen for everyone to see. The result? A still JPG of the storyboard and a mesmerising timelapse video that brings the event's concepts and ideas to life.

Why is visual storytelling a powerful tool for events?

  1. Engagement and Inspiration: It turns words into a visual journey, making content more memorable and engaging.
  2. Visual Record: It provides a unique and tangible visual record that attendees can reflect on and share, extending the event's reach far beyond the day itself.

The heart behind the Diverse Women’s Network Launch

Mosaic Hues is a social enterprise and a beacon of hope and support for refugee and migrant women in Toowoomba. Their mission? To create a community where these incredible women can thrive. On June 25th, Mosaic Hues launched the Diverse Women’s Network, an event designed to celebrate cultural diversity and foster meaningful connections.

One attendee Dr Ruth Knight summed it up beautifully:

What were the goals of the night?

For Mosaic Hues, the event was all about:

  • Raising Awareness: Highlighting the importance and impact of their work.
  • Fostering Connections: Encouraging networking and support among diverse women.
  • Celebrating Diversity: Creating a memorable and engaging event that showcases cultural richness.

For Indi Dust, the goals were to:

  • Capture Key Moments: Visually document the heart of the event.
  • Convey Emotions: Use illustrations to evoke feelings of positivity, confidence, and authenticity.
  • Enhance Engagement: Make the event more interactive and memorable.

How did Indi Dust bring the event story to life?

Preparation: A great story starts with careful planning. Indi Dust kicked off the process with an event planning call to nail down the details, goals, and creative ideas. This led to crafting a storyboard template that reflected Mosaic Hues’ brand colours and themes.

Visual Storytelling activations at the event:

  1. Pre-drawn Timelapse Animation: A hand-drawn animation welcoming everyone in different languages set the tone as attendees arrived.
  2. Live Drawing: Throughout the event, Indi’s iPad was used to sketch key moments, ideas, and even a spoken word poem by Anisa Nandaula.
  3. Engagement Wall: An interactive wall where guests added their thoughts on what a supportive network means, captured in a timelapse video.

Visual Storytelling event runsheet:

  1. Setup: Indi arrived an hour early to set up the engagement wall and check the tech.
  2. Engagement Wall: During networking, Indi guided attendees to write down values on the wall, making everyone part of the story.
  3. Visual Storytelling: As the event unfolded, Indi captured the essence of the presentations and conversations with live drawings projected onto big screens.
  4. Capturing Poetry: When Anisa performed her spoken word poem, Indi created a live drawing that captured the spirit of her words.
  5. Event Recap: At the end of the night, a timelapse video of the welcome animations, event story, and poetry played on repeat, creating a stunning visual recap as guests mingled.

Where did the magic happen?

Audience Engagement: The visual storytelling captivated the crowd, with many attendees approaching Indi to marvel at the live drawing process. People were fascinated by the dynamic and creative nature of the work.

“The event was not only a lot of fun due to the engaging activity but also very entertaining and informative. We had comments about how these events can be a little dry, but thanks to Indi, it was not the case for the Diverse Women’s Network Launch.” – Rachael Carter (Mosaic Hues)

Emotional Connection: A neurodiverse attendee shared how the visuals helped her process the event’s ideas, providing a helpful focus. Attendees appreciated how the storytelling made the event more engaging and memorable.

“Indi summarised all that had been discussed in a really effective way, showing a deep understanding of the topic. It wasn’t just a bunch of drawings from keywords - Indi fully grasped the concepts and helped frame them in a logical manner.” – Rachael Carter (Mosaic Hues)

What were the positive outcomes achieved?

Quantitative Data: We’re still gathering specific metrics like social media mentions and membership increases, but the personal feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

Anecdotal Evidence: Attendees were in awe of Indi’s skills and the way the visual storytelling made the event more engaging and memorable.
