How Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) Will Disrupt Education

Sometime last year, 2022, I decided to explore Virtual Reality (VR) as the buzz around it intensified, particularly with Facebook's rebranding to Meta. This shift signalled a new era, hinting at an impending revolution that I felt compelled to be part of. My search for Meta Quest 2 headsets in Kenya, however, was fruitless. It wasn't until a work trip to Dubai later that year that I finally acquired them for about USD 450 each. Returning home with 2 units, and later adding a third, I embarked on a journey through various VR experiences, from immersive games to exploring Horizon worlds. The potential for social interaction transformation was evident. Despite the slower-than-anticipated growth of the VR market, its potential, especially in the education sector, struck me as immense and largely untapped.

The Transformational Power of VR and MR in Education

As I navigated through the virtual realms, the expansive potential of VR beyond entertainment became increasingly clear. Education, in particular, stood out as a domain ripe for transformation, propelled by substantial investments from tech giants like Meta and Apple in VR and MR technologies.

  • VR and MR in Medical Studies

In medical education, the impact of VR and MR is nothing short of transformative. These technologies empower medical students to practice surgical procedures in risk-free virtual environments and explore human anatomy in unprecedented 3D detail. Dr. Shafi Ahmed, a trailblazer in VR surgery, encapsulates this sentiment: "VR has the potential to revolutionize medical education by allowing students to experience and learn from real-life surgeries in a controlled environment."

A case in point is the Neurological Surgery VR (NSVR) program at the University of California, San Francisco, which provides medical students with an immersive platform to interact with high-fidelity models of the human brain, enhancing their understanding of neuroanatomy beyond what traditional methods could offer.

  • VR and MR in Engineering and Architectural Studies

For students engaged in engineering and architectural studies, VR and MR have evolved from novel tools to essential educational assets. They facilitate the visualization of complex structures, foster a deeper understanding of spatial relationships, and enable virtual walkthroughs of architectural designs. Greg Lynn, an esteemed architect and academic, aptly notes, "VR allows architects and engineers to inhabit their designs long before they are constructed."

This paradigm shift is exemplified by Stanford University’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab, which leverages VR to assist architectural students in designing spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also ergonomically sound and user-centric.

  • VR and MR in Art and Social Studies

The realms of art and social studies are equally ripe for the transformative influence of VR and MR. These technologies can animate history, facilitate immersive cultural experiences, and cultivate empathy in ways previously unimaginable. The Anne Frank House VR experience is a poignant example, enabling users to virtually navigate the secret annex where Anne Frank and her family hid during World War II, thereby providing a powerful and immersive historical lesson.

Companies Creating VR and MR Solutions

At the forefront of VR and MR innovations are companies like Meta and Apple. Meta's Quest platform is at the vanguard of promoting social VR experiences that have the potential to redefine collaborative learning. Concurrently, companies like Magic Leap and Microsoft are championing MR technologies, overlaying digital information onto the real world to enrich the educational landscape.

A Review of Meta Quest 3 Headset

The anticipation surrounding the Meta Quest 3 headset is palpable within the educational technology community. Rumoured to be a substantial leap forward, the Quest 3 is expected to feature enhanced processing power, improved display resolution, and an ergonomic design tailored for prolonged use, promising a more immersive and comfortable learning experience.

A Review of Apple Vision Pro

Apple Vision Pro, although shrouded in mystery, is anticipated to make a significant entry into the MR market. Apple's reputation for intuitive design and seamless user experience suggests that the Vision Pro could offer an MR experience that is both unparalleled and immensely beneficial for educational purposes.

Where to Learn VR and MR

For enthusiasts and professionals keen on diving into VR and MR, a plethora of learning resources and courses are available. Platforms like Coursera and Udemy, along with specialized programs like XR Bootcamp, provide a range of courses catering to various levels of expertise, from beginners to advanced practitioners.

The Opportunities in Africa's VR Industry

Africa presents a fertile ground for VR in education, with its growing population of tech-savvy youths and an increasing focus on digital innovation. Initiatives such as the Virtual Reality Education Pathfinders in South Africa are trailblazing the integration of VR into classrooms, aiming to make learning more interactive, engaging, and effective.

The Risks Associated with VR and MR

As with any emerging technology, VR and MR come with their share of risks and challenges. These include the potential for addiction, privacy concerns, and the risk of a digital divide exacerbating educational inequalities. Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus VR, cautions, "We need to ensure that VR is a force for good, providing educational benefits without becoming a substitute for real-world experiences."

Conclusion

My exploration of VR has convinced me of its transformative potential in education. As we embrace the possibilities of VR and MR, we must also responsibly navigate the challenges they present. The journey of integrating VR and MR into education is just beginning, and it holds the promise of profoundly reshaping the way we learn and interact with knowledge. The future is here, and it's virtual.
