Sometime last year, 2022, I decided to explore Virtual Reality (VR) as the buzz around it intensified, particularly with Facebook's rebranding to Meta. This shift signalled a new era, hinting at an impending revolution that I felt compelled to be part of. My search for Meta Quest 2 headsets in Kenya, however, was fruitless. It wasn't until a work trip to Dubai later that year that I finally acquired them for about USD 450 each. Returning home with 2 units, and later adding a third, I embarked on a journey through various VR experiences, from immersive games to exploring Horizon worlds. The potential for social interaction transformation was evident. Despite the slower-than-anticipated growth of the VR market, its potential, especially in the education sector, struck me as immense and largely untapped.

As I navigated through the virtual realms, the expansive potential of VR beyond entertainment became increasingly clear. Education, in particular, stood out as a domain ripe for transformation, propelled by substantial investments from tech giants like Meta and Apple in VR and MR technologies.
In medical education, the impact of VR and MR is nothing short of transformative. These technologies empower medical students to practice surgical procedures in risk-free virtual environments and explore human anatomy in unprecedented 3D detail. Dr. Shafi Ahmed, a trailblazer in VR surgery, encapsulates this sentiment: "VR has the potential to revolutionize medical education by allowing students to experience and learn from real-life surgeries in a controlled environment."

The Risks Associated with VR and MR
As with any emerging technology, VR and MR come with their share of risks and challenges. These include the potential for addiction, privacy concerns, and the risk of a digital divide exacerbating educational inequalities.
