How to Vacation and Truly Recharge

We take vacations to spend time with friends and family, relax, and rejuvenate. But too often, the extra workload before and after a trip cancels out the benefits, leaving us just as stressed.

Here are several tips to ensure that your vacation rejuvenates you and puts you in the proper perspective upon your return to work:

Before You Leave: Setting Yourself Up for Success

Much of the groundwork for a stress-free vacation happens before you even leave the office:

  • Prioritize Early. A few weeks before your vacation, list the essential tasks you must complete before you go. Other responsibilities will arise, but unless they’re urgent, stay focused on your list.
  • Communicate Your Absence. Let your boss, colleagues, and clients know when you’ll be away and your plan to unplug. This encourages them to address important matters beforehand.
  • Prepare for a Smooth Return. Before leaving, outline key priorities for your return. This will help you ease back into work without feeling overwhelmed.

During Your Trip: Maximizing Relaxation

Your vacation is your opportunity to recharge—make the most of it:

  • Set Boundaries with Work. If you must check in, schedule a designated time to do so rather than letting it disrupt your trip.
  • Be Intentional About Relaxation. Just as you set goals at work, set an intention for your vacation—whether it’s to feel joyful, calm, or energized.
  • Fully Unplug. Resist the urge to check work emails while sitting on the beach. Your mind and body will thank you.

Returning to Work: Easing Back In

A thoughtful approach to re-entry can make your transition smoother:

  • Take Control of Your First Day. Instead of diving straight into emails, spend the first few hours outlining priorities and setting a game plan.
  • Reset Priorities. What was urgent before your trip may no longer be the most pressing matter. Check in with key colleagues to get up to speed.
  • Reflect on Your Vacation. Did you achieve the intention you set? Take moments to relive the best experiences and carry that refreshed mindset into your work. Take moments to remember some of the best experiences of your trip.

Enjoy a Truly Restorative Vacation

You’ve earned your break—don’t let stress take away from it. By planning ahead, setting boundaries, and easing back into work, you can enjoy a vacation that leaves you truly refreshed and ready to tackle what’s next.

Next time you plan a trip, try these steps and experience the difference!
