Family is important to our daily lives. Relationships with lovers or friends come and go, but often family is forever. Just like other areas of your life, imagination can help your family life.?
How to use your imagination to help your family life:
Thinking of Fun Activities
A parent’s life, especially with younger children, is essentially finding ways to keep your kids engaged. I say this tongue-in-cheek, but it is closer to reality than you may think. Having a healthy imagination helps you develop new and exciting activities for both your children and you!?
Being Able to Relate?
It can be hard to relate to people born of another generation, even if you helped create that person! In fact, some would say,?especially?if you created this person. The inverse is true too. You might have a hard time relating to your elder family members born of generations before you. Imagination will help you relate to these family members.?
You might not share the same experiences with these people, but you can imagine what it was like to grow up in a different generation and how that might affect current behaviours. Same thing for the younger generation. You can imagine how growing up in this social network age might change their needs or behaviors.?
Important For Children’s Development?
Imaginative play isn’t just fun; it could be downright vital for your child’s development.?Sally Goddard Blythe, director of The Institute for Neuro-Physiological Psychology believes you cannot overstate the importance of imagination. In her words:?
“Put simply; imagination is the ability to create visual images in the mind’s eye, which allows us to explore all sorts of images and ideas without being constrained by the limits of the physical world. This is how children begin to develop problem-solving skills, coming up with new possibilities, new ways of seeing and being, which develop important faculties in critical thinking that will help the child throughout life.”
Think of Out of The Box Solutions
Family life is fraught with unforeseen issues and obstacles. A healthy imagination helps you envision these pitfalls before they happen so you can devise plans to deal with them. Even the most imaginative of us will still be surprised by some issues that affect our family, though. In these cases, a healthy imagination can help you quickly devise a response.?
Develop Ways to Deal with Toxicity?
Not all our family interactions are positive. Most of us can probably think of a holiday incident where extended family members butted heads. Worse yet, is when certain members of your family are toxic. They drain your energy, are quick to argue, and know exactly how to push your buttons. While avoiding these people is sometimes the best option, it isn’t always possible. Your imagination can certainly help you devise ways to positively manage interactions with them.?
Here’s an every day real life example:
A simple and powerful example is reading to your children. This act may seem like an everyday occurrence (and bravo if so!), but its power cannot be overstated. Reading to your child ignites their imagination, opens them up to new worlds, and builds a better bond.?
While you're busy using your imagination to help your family remember to use it to help yourself too. If you could lift the limits you feel are currently imposed on you, what sort of life would you like to imagine?
