How to Use Tarpaulin for Temporary Roofing After Hurricanes or Storms

Choosing the Right Type of Tarpaulin

When selecting tarpaulin for roofing, it's important to choose a material suited for UV exposure and weather resistance. Here are some popular options homeowners use:

Polyethylene Tarps

Polyethylene tarps are lightweight and inexpensive, making them practical for small jobs. However, polyethylene breaks down rapidly in sunlight over long periods. Thicknesses of 4-6 mil are recommended.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tarps

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) Tarpaulins hold up well to sun and tearing but can be more expensive initially. They are commonly used for larger commercial applications. PVC tarps should be at minimum 6 mil.

Reinforced Polyester Tarps

Reinforced polyester tarps blend strength with longevity in the sun. While more expensive, polyester will maintain flexibility longer in extreme heat. Thicknesses of 10 oz are suitable.

Installing Tarpaulin Along Various Roof Angles and Surfaces

The technique for installing tarps will vary depending on a roof's design elements:

Flat or Low-Pitched Roofs:

For roofs under a 3:12 pitch, drape tarps smoothly and secure all edges. Use sandbags or support beams under seams to prevent sagging.

Steep-Pitched Roofs:

Staple or nail tarps start at ridges and work toward eaves. Use rope tied to line nails to hold tarps taut.

Gabled Roofs:

Run tarps the long way across each roof plane. Secure seams with double nails or tape where roof planes meet along ridges.

Hipped Roofs:

Start at corners and work across, lapping seams. Reinforce seams where multiple roof planes intersect.

Dormers:

Drape tarps up and over dormer roofs, securing all edges. Reinforce with support beams under long seams.

Inspecting and Maintaining the Temporary Tarp Roof

Even with careful installation, temporary tarps will need periodic maintenance to ensure continued protection:

After Rain or Wind:

Inspect for lifted edges, corners, or seams and retighten fixings as needed. Tarps may pull away slightly as they age.

Every 2-3 Months:

Do a full roof inspection looking for wear, damage, or degradation from UV exposure. Repair or replace Tarpaulin Sheet showing weaknesses.

Annually:

Reseal any seams, edges, or fixings that have cracked with a flexible sealant made for tarps. Apply in dry conditions per manufacturer instructions.

Lifting Corners:

Add more supports under long-running seams, and secure any tarps lifting at corners with additional roofing nails along the perimeter.

Damaged Areas:

Patch or repair tarps using adhesive tape recommended for the tarp material. For large holes, replace damaged sections.

Tarp Replacement:

Tarps may need replacement every 9-12 months depending on material grade and weather exposure. Signs include cracking, hardening, or discoloration.

Securing the Tarpaulin Roof

Proper installation is key to preventing tarps from blowing off during the next storm. These tools and techniques will help create a sturdy, weather-resistant tarp roof:

Laying Out the Tarp:

Measure the roof and cut tarps with at least 3 feet of overhang on all sides. Unroll tarps smoothly to avoid creases which can cause leaks.

Draping Method:

For low-sloped roofs, drape tarps loosely and allow gravity to pull them flat. Bring edges up the roofline and secure.

Fastening:

Starting at corners and working inward, attach tarps using roofing nails every 12-24 inches. Drive nails at a 45° angle to ensure securement.

Staking:

On steep roofs, secure Heavy Duty Tarpaulin with line nails and rope tied to stakes driven into the ground along roof edges and ridges.

Seaming:

Overlap seams by 12 inches and double-nail, or use seam tape made for tarp material.

Support Beams:

Reinforce long-span sections or overhead seams by fastening horizontal support beams under edges or every 5 feet. Use 2x4s or heavier lumber rated for roof loads.
