How to Use Social Media to Increase Church Attendance

Social media is a powerful, effective tool to promote church attendance and growth. Churches are highly encouraged to use social media as an evangelism tool. As church leaders work to redeem the lost, capture the hearts of the unchurched, and introduce people to Christ, they need to meet people where they are - on social media.

First off, many pastors and and leaders are hesitant about using social media. Part of the matter is because they don’t have a blueprint or a strategy about what to do. Secondly, church leaders have yet to compose a social media team to carry out such duties. These are key components to carrying out effective evangelism using social media.

Good news is, there are ways to fill the seats without a social media strategy and/or team in place. How? Each ministry can start where they are with what they have by:

1. Asking members to be intentional about inviting friends and family. Congregants should be encouraged to invite people they know and do not know. It’s a great idea to distribute cards or invites that members can pass out.

2. Embracing selfies. Do something fun like #SundaySelfie during church service. Literally ask your members to take out their phone, snap a selfie (or a group photo), and post it on their social media platforms. Everyone’s caption should read something like: I love being here at [church name]. You should be our guest next week at [time]. The church’s Facebook Page should also be tagged (or @mentioned) in the post.

3. Composing a custom hashtag. How would you describe the worship experience of your church? What do/will people love about your church. What’s the current theme? What’s the DNA of your church? Create a specific hashtag that can be used with your posts. This creates a movement. This invites visitors and potential members to view what they just may want to be a part of (even before they walk through the doors).

4. Recording video testimonials. Make it a common practice, set up a system that allows members to share why they joined the church, what they love about attending, and why others should visit. Word of mouth still goes a long way.

5. Hiring a great brand strategist and graphic designer. You must help people envision the vision of the house. Presentation matters. Operate in a spirit of excellence and ensure that your social media posts are well done. This happens when you have invested in a marketing agency to help build your church’s brand. The graphics are also important. Why? It’s your way of getting information out to the public. So, you must ensure that all social media posts are designed appropriately.

6. Investing in Facebook Ads. No explanation needed. It’s okay to pay to reach more people. As you attract new believers and the unchurched, Facebook ads and boosts will benefit your ministry.

As you work to carry out the Great Commission, it’s totally okay to find new, unconventional ways to reach new people. Implement these tips and let me know how it works. Also, if you have additional tips, be sure to leave them in the comment section below.
