As we observe Mental Health Awareness Week, it's crucial to shed light on the pressing issue of stress and anxiety that continues to impact a significant portion of the UK population. Recent statistics paint a sobering picture, with a staggering 74% of people in the UK reporting feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope due to stress in the past year alone. The ripple effects of this mental health crisis are far-reaching, with 51% of stressed adults experiencing depression and 61% grappling with anxiety.
Some of the biggest contributors to poor mental health, aside from financial, health, and job security issues, come via news channels or social media. Consuming too much negative news activates the body's stress response system, leading to the release of hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This can cause physical symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, and gut problems, as well as psychological effects like anxiety and vivid or disturbing dreams. Even brief exposure to negative news can enhance the tendency to "catastrophize" or blow personal or professional worries out of proportion, increasing expectations of worst-case scenarios.
While staying informed is important, excessive consumption of negative news can have a significant psychological toll. It can perpetuate a cycle of anxiety, distress, and doomscrolling behavior that ultimately harms mental well-being. Moderating news intake, practicing self-care, and cultivating optimism can help mitigate these negative effects.
As employers, we can also do our bit to help promote a healthy balance of news to cultivate good mental health across our teams:
Create a Dedicated Positive News Channel
Establish a dedicated channel or space within your company's internal communication platforms (e.g., intranet, messaging apps, newsletters) specifically for sharing positive news articles and stories. This can foster a culture of celebration, recognition, and motivation among employees.
Encourage Employee Contributions
Motivate employees to actively contribute positive news articles, success stories, or uplifting anecdotes related to their work or the company's achievements. This can promote a sense of community, collaboration, and shared accomplishments.

Celebrate Employee and Team Achievements
Regularly share positive news articles or stories that highlight the achievements, milestones, or contributions of individual employees or teams within your organisation. This can boost morale, foster a sense of pride, and encourage others to strive for excellence.
Incorporate Positive News into Training and Development
Integrate positive news articles and case studies into training programs, workshops, or professional development initiatives. These can serve as inspiring examples, promote ethical behavior, and encourage a more sustainable and socially responsible mindset.
Balance Negative News with Positive Perspectives
While it's important to stay informed about challenges and potential obstacles, make a conscious effort to balance negative news with positive articles that offer solutions, hope, and a constructive outlook. This can help maintain a healthy perspective and prevent feelings of disengagement or powerlessness. By actively seeking out and sharing positive news articles within your professional environment, you can cultivate a more optimistic and motivated workforce, foster a solutions-oriented mindset, and create a supportive and engaging work culture.
