How to use peat so as not to ruin your plantings.

In order for peat to benefit your #garden and vegetable garden, you need to know, firstly, some of its features.?Secondly, before using peat, it is necessary to determine the type of soil on the site.?Thirdly, it is also necessary to introduce this rock into the soil correctly.

Due to its many beneficial properties, #peat is used in #horticulture and #agriculture .

What is peat?

This is not a fertilizer in its pure form and not soil, as some believe, it is a mineral.

For thousands of years, dead plant and animal remains have accumulated at the bottom of the swamps.?They constantly layered on top of each other - and the result was a compressed layer.?In the absence of air and under the influence of a high level of humidity, its contents decomposed more and more - this is how peat turned out.?The formation of this mineral is still going on.

There are three types of peat.?Plant residues lying on the surface of bogs and receiving atmospheric nutrition form high-moor peat.?And the remains of vegetation that feed on groundwater are low-lying peat.?Transitional peat is also distinguished between these two species.

Different types of minerals differ from each other not only in the level of decomposition, but also in their properties.?Let's name the most important for #gardeners :

  • acidity level: low-lying peat has a neutral or slightly acidic pH level (5.5-6.5), and high-moor peat has an acidic or strongly acidic reaction (2.5-4.5);
  • saturation with nutrients: their amount is much higher in low-lying peat.?For example, the share of such humic acids needed by plants varies in different types of peat from 20 to 70%.

When using peat in the garden, these characteristics are extremely important, because they can have either a positive effect on planting, or a negative one.

The benefits of peat.

Is it possible to take the best - low-lying - peat, scatter it around the garden and, after a certain time, get an incredible harvest??Unfortunately no.?As mentioned at the beginning, peat itself is not a fertilizer.?However, judicious use of peat can have a beneficial effect on the soil, as a result of which the quantity and quality of the collected peat will be much higher.

How to use peat for #soil #fertilization correctly?

  1. To increase the acidity of the soil.?If your site has alkaline soil, then peat is the best way to neutralize it.?If the degree of alkalization is not high, the use of low-lying or transitional peat is recommended; at a higher pH level, high-moor peat will be needed.?The addition of peat to the soil will also have a positive effect on planting if you grow?crops that prefer acidic soil?: rhododendron, hydrangea, magnolia, blueberry, etc.
  2. To increase the moisture and air permeability of the soil.?In areas with heavy clay soil, where the access of air to plant roots is difficult, peat, due to its fibrous structure, will make the soil looser and lighter.?On sandy soils that do not retain moisture well, it will also improve the quality of the soil.?Due to its ability to absorb large amounts of water and retain it, peat will make the sandy soil more water-absorbing.
  3. To increase soil fertility.?Peat contains a large amount of nitrogen necessary for all crops, but plants can assimilate only a small amount.?The same applies to other useful substances that peat is rich in.?To turn it into top dressing, you need to use peat in combination with mineral and?organic fertilizers?.?Another option is to use peat when composting.?In terms of its nutritional value, peat compost is not only not inferior to the manure beloved by summer residents, but, if it was prepared correctly, even surpasses it.

?How to properly use peat in the #garden .

To maximize the benefits of peat for your green spaces, remember a few important rules:

  • Fresh peat is toxic, therefore, before using it, it is “weathered” for a certain period (kept in heaps, which are shoved from time to time).?The duration of weathering depends on the type of peat: for low-lying peat, several days are enough, for high-peat it takes 2-3 months;
  • when adding high-moor peat, be sure to add substances that?will reduce the level of soil acidity: dolomite flour, lime, ash, chalk, etc.;
  • peat is often used as a mulching material.?This is especially useful on soils that are crusty after every heavy rain.?However, you need to mulch with peat correctly.?If you just spread the peat in a thin layer, then after a while all the moisture will disappear from it and it will completely lose its ability to absorb water and lose its useful properties.?To prevent this from happening, peat in an empty area (this can be done both in spring and in autumn) should be buried in the ground to a depth of about 20 cm. For a garden bed, this option is suitable - spread the peat between the rows of plants and loosen it, stirring it at the same time with the ground.?

?Only when you use our peat correctly will this benefit your garden!
