How to Use Instagram's New AI Backdrop Feature: A Simple Guide

Instagram has recently unveiled its latest feature, Backdrop, an innovative AI-powered tool designed to revolutionize the way users customize the backgrounds in their Instagram Stories. Currently exclusive to the U.S., Backdrop empowers users to creatively alter their story backgrounds using simple prompts, similar to other AI photo tools like Midjourney.

Ahmad Al-Dahle, the head of AI at Instagram, shared insights on Threads about how this tool functions. Users can input imaginative prompts like “chased by dinosaurs” or “surrounded by puppies,” and the AI will transform their photo accordingly. This feature, while not flawless, introduces a fun and interactive element to Instagram storytelling.

How to Use Backdrop in 5 Minutes

Step 1: Capture Your Photo Begin by taking a photo for your story. Ensure your subject (such as your face) doesn’t fill the entire screen to give the AI space to operate.

Step 2: Activate AI Tap the AI button at the top of your screen, the first in a series of five options. The AI will initiate, displaying a sparkle grid, and then outline the subject in your photo.

Step 3: Input Your Desired Background Here, you can choose any backdrop you like. For instance, typing “in the Wild West” prompts the AI to get to work, accompanied by its characteristic sparkling effect.

Step 4: Select Your Favourite The AI will present two backdrop options. Select your preferred choice and add it to your story.

Al-Dahle explained that once you’ve shared your AI-crafted image, a ‘Try it’ sticker automatically appears, encouraging your friends to experiment with Backdrop. This new feature, albeit not perfect, adds an engaging twist to your Instagram experiences, making storytelling more imaginative and interactive.
