How to use impact statements to ace your next teaching interview

As an international teacher, you've likely been involved in all sorts of amazing initiatives and projects over the course of your career. These could range from curriculum development, to community outreach programs, to innovative teaching approaches you've piloted in your classroom. The challenge is distilling all of that fantastic work into a concise and compelling way to present your background to potential employers.

The first step is to do a thorough audit of your career history.

Go through your resume, old performance reviews, and any other records you have, and make a list of all the major projects, initiatives, and accomplishments you've been a part of. For each one, jot down some key details - what was the goal or purpose, what was your specific role, what were the outcomes or impacts? It's helpful to quantify the impact where possible, such as the number of students reached, amount of funding secured, or improvement in test scores.

Once you have that information documented, you can start crafting "impact statements" that you can use in interviews and on your resume. These should be 1-2 sentence descriptions that highlight your specific contributions and the tangible difference you made.

For example: "Developed and implemented a new STEM-focused curriculum that increased student engagement and learning outcomes in science by 25% over the prior year." Or "Secured $15,000 in grant funding to launch an after-school tutoring program that provided academic support to 50 underserved students." These kinds of impactful statements will make you a much more compelling candidate and help you stand out from the crowd.

The key is to really own and articulate the value you've brought in your past roles. Don't be shy about showcasing your accomplishments - international teachers have so much to offer, and these impact statements are a great way to ensure prospective employers see the full breadth of your experience and expertise.
