The problem with being a professional writer is that you can easily fall into the trap of doing your work on autopilot. That’s where you risk your ability to keep your words honest.
When your work starts to make your talent or skill ‘automated’, it helps to step back and re-read your piece to yourself. Would you say these words to someone else and stand by them?
Challenge your thinking
I believe the first step to overcoming this mundane obstacle as a writer is to challenge your words. Argue with them, battle with them. Do whatever it takes to bring them to life and set them on fire. When you give them the ability to live and breathe on their own, then you know they’re as raw and honest as they can get.
Forget about what the rest of the world will think of you — the greatest minds will never become the greatest from hiding in the shadows.
Tips for becoming extraordinary
- Follow the trends but offer a different view. If you’re a marketer by nature, it’s time to ditch the mass mentality and release the artistic side.
- Write on what you’re passionate about. Don’t avoid these topics because you are scared of what people might think of your true passions. There is a community out there for everything.
- Pretend your work is your mirror. Does it speak volumes about you? This is the only question you need to ask when you’re done.
- Be brave. No one became extraordinary without charging out of their comfort zones.
- Write as if no one else will read it. Sometimes this is the easiest way to get completely down and honest with yourself.
