How To Use Google Alerts for Job Searches

Job Search platforms have been a Go To source for decades to land jobs.

They are safe, they are low-risk and spoiler alert: they are low-return!

As an Interview Coach, my first bit of advice to my clients is to start capitalizing on platforms which favor networking over resume aka LinkedIn.

And my second bit of advice? Use Google Alerts.

Let's delve in to the how and what of it

How to Create a Google Alert?

1. Visit?www.google.com/alerts.
2. Type a search term into the search box.
3. Before clicking “Create Alert,” click “Show Options.”
4. Play around with the different settings until you find the ones that fit you best. How often do you want your Alerts? Options are “As-it-happens,” “At most once a day,” and “At most once a week.” In addition, if you’d like, Google will allow you to limit your search to news, blogs, the web, video, books, discussions and finance. Which one is best for you? Would you like to specify a language or a location for your search results? You can also have Google filter, or unfilter, your search results, for the quality of the content.
5. Specify your email address.
6. Click “Create Alert,” and you’re all set!

Which Keyword Combinations should you target?

1. Get the basics right: There is a wide array of keyword combinations possible. Here are a few basic ones to start with:

• [INSERT SPECIFIC COMPANY] + hiring
• [INSERT SPECIFIC COMPANY] + “press release” + jobs
• [INSERT SPECIFIC LOCATION] + [INSERT OCCUPATION] + [YOUR CITY] jobs
• [INSERT SPECIFIC INDUSTRY] + [YOUR CITY] + “company expanding”
• Jobs in [INSERT SPECIFIC INDUSTRY] + [YOUR CITY]
• Hot jobs in [INSERT SPECIFIC INDUSTRY]

2. Keep a track of your dream companies! You might have missed applying to these positions in the past because hey! who can keep a track of all the news all the time?! Well now you can! Use these for example:

• Apple jobs [INSERT LOCATION]
• Marketing jobs Apple “creative”
• Apple jobs “press release”
• New projects Apple

What more can you do with Google Alerts?

1. You can stay up-to-date on your prospective employer. Get alerted about new developments, announcements (good or bad) etc.
2. You can also prepare for interviews with the help of the updated info. It will add more value to your cultural and managerial rounds.
3. You can keep a check on domain-specific or industry-specific news. Hello leverage!
