HOW TO USE EVERYTHING TO REACH THAT DREAM OF YOURS
Today’s article is about helping you understand that everything you are doing now is important for reaching your dream but its how you look at things that determines if you benefit or waste what’s happening now. Often I will meet a young person who says they want to be a Doctor but they are a waiter and they don’t realize how being a waiter can help them to become a Doctor. I know thats a bit out there right? WRONG! Take me for example I did so many different things before I became a comic but was comedy the end goal? READ BELOW and see how my life is all fitting together.
:::::::::::Artist
I used to draw very well when I was young ie from age 3 ie when I was 8 my Dad would have my drawing and painting graded by High School A' Level Art teachers (no pressure). Today art has become very important in my day to day work. I bring art into the food I develop or creating vision in people’s minds. I even use my ability to draw to explain difficult concepts to people in my presentations. Everything I do is visual first.
:::::::::::Graphic Designer
I worked a lot as a graphic designer in different companies but most people don’t know this started in school. I used to design the school newsletter by cutting and pasting pictures and text physically with scissor and glue then when the desktop publisher was invented I fell in love with computer aided design. Graphic design has been the corner stone of allowing me to do work for myself as a stand up comedian, making my look consistent and growing me and making me more noticeable.
:::::::::::Kitchen Porter
I worked in kitchens as a porter in England which meant washing dishes and carrying stuff. I was young and excited about the food industry and wished back then in the 90’s that if I was consistent with my interest one day I would run a chain or restaurants. My goal though was to turnaround restaurants but taking them from where they are to something completely amazing. I am currently working on my second project which is an amazing restaurant and bar called ZAMBEZI HOUSE turning a bar and restaurant into a TOURIST ATTRACTION.
:::::::::::Zimbabwe
Being Zimbabwean is a job in itself. Working outside the box, with the box and sometimes inside it are the hallmarks of being Zimbabwean. Being Zimbo is a skill we must never take for granted. Being Zimbabwean made me understand that the world knows everything about us, so its easy to start a conversation with anyone which means its easier to sell to anyone around the world if you have a product good enough. For example the narrative I sell is that my comedy is about being an AFRICAN. From Zimbabwe its more intriguing outside of AFRICA.
:::::::::::Audio Visual Specialist
My first job when I left school was working for Presentation solutions. The job was simple…learn everything. In a way I believe this first job truly defined the person I would become and my traits. In this job I setup PA systems, I would DJ at corporate events, I would carry and setup cables for lighting and also design powerpoint presentations for CEO’s. My gosh this job made me meet everyone, observe everything and learn so so much as a 17 year old out of school.
:::::::::::House Keeping
My cousin hooked me up with a job making beds and cleaning hotels rooms in England. I would have to make up 25 rooms per shift on my own. Each of us had a floor to do. I learnt so much about hotel standards I paid attention I studied the behavior of guests because one day I knew I would have to run my own hotel.
:::::::::::Programmer
When I went to Prince Edward School to be in form one it was 1991 and I was 11 turning 12 years. I was introduced to COBOL, BASIC, PASCAL, LOTUS 123 and Word Perfect. I fell in love with coding and learning languages. The ability to speak to a computer and tell it what to do from designing a logo to making a case rental system using DBASE iii. This may all be jibberrish but once a programmer always a programmer. This helps me at times in app development or working with other programmers. I don’t need to know everything but I can read and write code when I need to. This is my most valuable asset.
:::::::::::Editor
At Prince Edward School I worked in the school newsletter and did so much writing I didn’t realize at the time that my ability to write so often would help in my day to day operations where my business requires me to send out updates, write press releases and even now creating a 60 page in-house magazine for ZAMBEZI HOUSE.
:::::::::::Bar man
I worked a number of late shifts to make some money in England as an assistant barman. Interacting with clients and making cocktails. This was great but most importantly exposed me to something my superior noticed. He told me I need to hold onto my ability to taste and remember flavors because I would often be able to just call out 2 flavors that I think could work together and BOOOM I always got the balance right. I trained that ability from the day he told me this in 1998 and it has been such an awesome gift for my cooking today.
:::::::::Comedian
My father was funny and he was a teacher and used comedy in his classes as well as at various functions he performed for friends. My father would also get me to tell his jokes to his friends and I would often remix and add my own. I always thought comedy was for old people because of the comedians I knew that my dad loved to watch. So I spent most of my years writing adverts, funny articles or just making my friends and colleagues laugh until that day Tariro neGitare just said do this on stage and I did and here we are.
So in a nutshel I have a dream of becoming a major media entity and the entire ecosystem to make this happen is coming together. I have just explained some components that will help me build that empire. I am running a restaurant and bar which is about to launch a 4 hour podcast every weekend which is broadcast on one radio station so far with a magazine available for free download and contains our awesome recipes and tells people where to find out and will be launching a comedy club…get it? Come work with us at our CO WORKING SPACE we can show you a dream we are building
