How to Use ChatGPT Effectively: A Beginner's Guide

How to Use ChatGPT Effectively: A Beginner's Guide

During the past few months, tools such as ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs) have become increasingly accessible, such as?GPT-4o mini and?GPT-4 Turbo. I have observed, however, that many of my friends, family members, and colleagues do not regularly use them or approach them with the mindset of one-and-done. If you're just getting started with AI tools, whether you're curious, intimidated, or don't know where to start—this article is for you. Although ChatGPT is the focus of this article, the list of tools available is growing daily.

Getting Over The Hump

There's no denying that trying out new technology is hard, especially when it's something as advanced as AI. But here's the thing—just like any new skill, you need to practice a lot to master it. Think of it like starting a workout routine. You wouldn't expect results from one workout, would you? The same applies here. It takes regular engagement, experimentation, and some trial and error to use tools like ChatGPT effectively.

Daily Practice is Important

One of the most common mistakes I see is people expecting AI tools to deliver perfect results after a single, simple prompt. They try it once, don't get what they want, and then give up, thinking the tool isn't useful. In fact, these tools work best if you use them every day and refine your approach over time.

The more you experiment with prompts, the better you'll understand how to frame your questions and commands to get the most accurate and useful responses. Think about it like a conversation because that's exactly what it is. Clarity and context are important in any conversation.

How do you make a good prompt?

Here's what a good prompt looks like:

Good Prompt:

I'm planning to write a blog post on digital transformation in small businesses. Can you provide a detailed outline that includes an introduction, key points, and a conclusion?

Why It's Good:

  • Specificity: You’re asking for something concrete—a blog post outline with specific sections.
  • Clarity: The prompt clearly defines the topic and the structure you're looking for.
  • Context: It provides enough information for the model to understand the context of your request.

Bad Prompt:

Write something about digital transformation.

Why It's Not Effective:

  • Vagueness: The request is too broad. Without more context, the model might not deliver content that aligns with your needs.
  • Lack of Direction: There's no guidance on what aspect of digital transformation to focus on or what type of content is desired.

The Art of Follow-Up Prompts

When you get a response, dig deeper. Think of ChatGPT like a collaborator.

  • Clarify: If the response isn’t quite right, ask for clarification or expansion. For example,

Can you elaborate on the challenges faced by small businesses during digital transformation?

  • Iterate: Use follow-up prompts to refine the content. If you like part of the response but not all of it, say so:

I like the second point. Can you expand on that with more examples?

  • Experiment: Don’t be afraid to try different approaches. If one prompt doesn’t yield the desired results, rephrase it or add more details.

Your Daily AI Workout

You can really utilize AI if you incorporate it into your daily routine. Start small—ask ChatGPT to help you draft an email, brainstorm ideas for a project, or summarize something. With time, you'll learn how to craft prompts that work, and you'll use it all the time.

Be bold, experiment, and keep going even if you don't get the perfect answer immediately. The goal isn't just to use these tools but to use them well. If you engage and learn more, you can navigate these tools easily and confidently.

Take advantage of AI tools like ChatGPT daily if you haven't already. You'll thank yourself later, as the sooner you learn AI tools, the better prepared you'll be for navigating them when they become more prevalent in the workplace.

Thanks for sharing this knowledge Matthew Sell! Berenice and I were just talking about this last week. This is very helpful for me as I take on my new career path as a Junior Project Manager and effectively utilize AI resources like ChatGPT. I am learning a lot from your posts and thanks for adding examples??
