How to Use ChatGPT to Improve Your Writing Workflow

I tried ChatGPT on a whim, but I ended up with three solid ideas for improving my writing workflow using this AI bot.

I have been writing an article for a Trade Journal on a particular model of Public Private Partnership (P3). I did my usual thing, googling down rabbit holes. Ideas started populating the page, like random daisies popping up on a field. I always enjoy this phase of writing, so many possibilities. But corralling them all into a cohesive article is a bit of a slog.

However, before I sat down for my second session of googling, I decided to see what ChatGPT had to say about the subject. I had heard about ChatGPT that morning on my favorite podcast, The Daily, and I thought I’d give it a try. I asked ChatGPT three questions:

·?????What are the benefits of P3’s for infrastructure projects?

·?????What are the downsides of P3’s from both private and public perspectives?

·?????What are examples of P3’s outside of the United States?

My expectations were low, given that the topic wasn’t exactly fodder for cocktail conversation, but I was pleasantly surprised. While ChatGPT didn’t write my article, it was a helpful addition to my writing workflow in three ways:

1.????Structuring my approach: The concise list of the six benefits of P3’s were a great jumping off point for the article. My googling around had led me to many of the same conclusions. However, if I had started with ChatGPT, I would have saved a lot of time and my googling would have been more purposeful.

?2.????Generating ideas for interview questions: Having been provided a list of the downsides of a particular type of P3 by ChatGPT, I was able to ask people more detailed questions and probe for those article-defining details. ChatGPT saved me time and improved the quality of my interview questions.

?3.????Producing a list of facts: Google wasn’t too helpful in identifying examples of the type of Ex-US P3 agreements that I was looking for. ChatGPT however, provided an example of three highly relevant deals with a short description on each. As ChatGPT warns on its first page, sometimes responses can be inaccurate. So, the old “trust but verify” adage applies when employing ChatGPT. However, in this instance, a quick check by an industry insider found that the AI has supplied correct answers. Again, a time saver for both me and my interviewees.

?As a storyteller, I know it’s the golden little nuggets that captivate readers. And while ChatGPT is unlikely to unearth any of those, it can function as a divining rod of sorts, steering the writer to the most fertile ground. So, I’ll be incorporating ChatGPT into my writing workflow.

I love how insightful and instructive your article is, Dorothy! #DavidaAITip friends: I use it to assess competitive risk for brands I represent, then form pitches that place my client/brand as a solution to the risk. If you try this, I'd love if you share your results with me and, heck, all of us. Thanks for the thought leadership Dorothy. ? ??? #bethestory

ChatGPT is astounding from my POV - however, it does have some issues w/ "honestly" in these early days of LMMs and AI. It's been documented that, at times, it serves up information that isn't always true. It's a phenomenal step forward in AI and the utility of computers, however, user beware... This isn't like talking to Mr. Data (Star Trek: the Next Generation) just yet... in 5+ years, I can't wait to see what it will do next... For now, it really can help with lots of stuff... from re-writing documents to consolidating lots of info on the web... but a critical eye must be used w/ its output...
