How to use chat GPT in Google Sheets

If you have questions, such as how to use ChatGPT in Google Sheets or how to connect ChatGPT to Google Sheets, you're in the right place. Continue reading, as I provide step-by-step instructions with screenshots to uncover the integration process for you.

ChatGPT for Sheets Extension

To begin using ChatGPT, the first step is to connect it to Google Sheets, which can be done via the add-on feature. To acquire the ChatGPT for Sheets add-on, navigate to the homepage, select 'Add-ons' from the menu, and then choose 'Get add-ons'.

Extensions -> Add-ons -> Get add-ons

When you click on 'Get add-ons,' the Google Workspace Marketplace will appear. In the search field, type 'GPT for Sheets and Docs'. For this demonstration, I used the add-on from Talarian, which offers a free trial, but feel free to choose any other extension from the list.

After installing the add-on, you'll find 'GPT for Sheets and Docs' under Extensions. Hovering over it will reveal the 'Enable GPT functions' option, which you need to click to activate GPT functions for this spreadsheet.

After enabling the add-on, you'll receive a notification confirming the successful activation of GPT functions.

Now that the functions have been activated, you can simply type '=GPT...' into the function bar to access various GPT functions. Hovering over each function will display a detailed description for your reference.

I selected the GPT_TABLE function in cell A1 and entered the following prompt within the double quotation marks: "table with top 50 countries per GDP listed from biggest to smallest in the 1st column and GDP amount in the second column." ChatGPT then built the respective table accordingly. So, basically with this formula ChatGPT will build any table based on your prompt.

Next, I used a GPT formula in cell C2 with the following prompt: '=GPT("official language", A2)'. This formula means that ChatGPT will identify the country's official language listed in cell A2.

As you can see from the screenshot above, the output deviated for different countries, indicating that the prompt may need improvement by adding relevant formatting details.
