How To Use Chat GPT: Create Your Own Courses

After only 2 months using Chat GPT 4, the most powerful thing I have heard recently is the enormous amount of how many words Chat GPT has actually been trained on.

At the beginning of the month, the amount was said to be around a staggering 300 Billion words. With two more updates since then, one can only guess whether Chat GPT is now trained on over a Trillion words. If it has, what does this mean for custodians of words in the form of educational institutions?

If I have over 300 Billion words on tap and in my pocket, do I need to pay for any course at all?

Which skills or knowledge should they acquire? Defining clear, measurable learning outcomes will serve as the blueprint for your course design. These objectives will guide the kind of content you'll want ChatGPT to generate and the types of exercises and discussions that will be beneficial to your students.

Designing the Course Outline

Once your objectives are clear, you can start outlining your course. This means deciding on the topics to be covered, the order of these topics, and the depth to which each topic will be explored. The course outline will serve as a roadmap for using ChatGPT. You can use the outline to guide the model in generating content, ensuring that each piece of information aligns with the overall course direction.

Using ChatGPT to Create Course Content

With clear objectives and a comprehensive course outline, you can now harness the power of ChatGPT to create course content. Here are a few ways you can do that:

1. Lecture Materials: ChatGPT can generate informative and comprehensive lecture materials. Provide the model with a clear prompt about the topic you want it to write about. For example, if you're teaching a course on World History and you're at the section about the French Revolution, you might prompt ChatGPT with "Write a 500-word lecture on the causes and effects of the French Revolution."?

2. Discussion Prompts: ChatGPT can also be used to create thought-provoking discussion prompts that engage students and stimulate critical thinking. For instance, in a philosophy course, you might ask ChatGPT to "Generate a discussion question on the ethical implications of AI."

3. Practice Exercises: Beyond providing information, ChatGPT can also help students apply what they've learned by generating relevant practice exercises. For a Mathematics course, you could ask the model to "Generate ten problems on quadratic equations."

Ensuring Content Accuracy and Relevance

Although ChatGPT is a powerful tool, it's important to remember that it's not infallible. Always review the content generated by the model for accuracy and relevance to your course. Make sure the information aligns with your course objectives and is accurate based on current knowledge in the field. If you find inaccuracies, you can adjust your prompt or provide more context to get a more accurate response.

Adjusting the Tone and Language Level of ChatGPT

Another powerful feature of ChatGPT is its ability to adjust its tone and language level based on the prompts it receives. This allows you to customize the content to your students' needs. If you're teaching a complex subject to beginners, you might instruct the model to "Explain quantum physics in simple, non-technical language." Conversely, for advanced students, you might want a more technical explanation.

Creating a course with ChatGPT involves a blend of clear course planning, strategic use of the AI model, and careful review of the generated content. It's an innovative and dynamic process that can revolutionize the way we teach and learn. However, remember that while ChatGPT is an incredibly useful tool, it is a supplement to, not a replacement for, traditional teaching methods and resources. The human touch in education, the ability to inspire, motivate, and understand the unique needs of each learner, remains irreplaceable.

Monitoring Student Progress and Modifying Content

As your course progresses, it’s important to monitor your students’ understanding and adjust your approach accordingly. ChatGPT can help facilitate this by generating formative assessment tools such as quizzes, short answer questions, or even discussion prompts that can gauge student understanding. Feedback from these assessments can help tailor the course content further, ensuring it remains effective and relevant.

For example, if students are struggling with a particular concept, you can have ChatGPT generate additional explanatory content, practice problems, or real-world examples that can help solidify understanding. If students are excelling and moving quickly through the material, you can prompt ChatGPT for more advanced content or supplementary materials that explore the topic in greater depth.

Encouraging Peer Learning and Discussion

ChatGPT can also be a powerful tool for encouraging peer learning and discussion. In an online course, for instance, ChatGPT-generated discussion prompts can serve as a starting point for threaded discussions. These discussions can then be guided and moderated by the instructor, creating a dynamic, interactive learning environment.

Similarly, for in-person classes, these prompts can serve as a springboard for in-class debates, group work, or other interactive learning activities. The ability to generate a wide variety of thought-provoking questions and prompts can help foster a vibrant, engaging classroom atmosphere.
