How to use AI to improve your writing

Welcome to the 10th edition of my Newsletter

One of the most common challenges I observe in learners is their inhibition when it comes to writing. Many struggle to construct a grammatically correct paragraph while also choosing the right words.

Another problem I notice is their hesitation to ask questions to clarify their doubts, as they are afraid of what others might think of them.

The biggest blessing for such learners has been the discovery of Large Language Models (AI) like Chat GPT, Claude and so on.

In this newsletter, I will discuss various ways to use AI to improve your writing skills.

Why Use AI

1. 24/7 availability: Practice anytime, anywhere.

2. Personalized feedback: Get instant advice on your writing.

3. Diverse Topics: Explore various subjects to expand your vocabulary and knowledge.

4. Grammar and Style Guidance: Receive suggestions to refine your language use.

How to Go about

The first step is to download an LLM (Large Language Model) App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. It is available for FREE.

Now that you have downloaded the app, use the following prompts to improve various aspects of your writing. In this Newsletter I shall be discussing the use of only ChatGPT.

1. Step-by-Step Writing Feedback

Ask ChatGPT to review a short text, or an essay or a paragraph written by you. Request specific feedback on grammar, style, or vocabulary.

Example: “Here is my paragraph about climate change. Can you point out grammatical errors and suggest improvements?”

2. Interactive Story Building

Engage in collaborative story writing where you write a part of a story and ChatGPT adds to it. It not only encourages creativity but also enhances vocabulary and grammar skills.

Prompt: “I’ll give you a sentence, and you add only one sentence in response until we reach the end of the story.”

3. Grammar and Style Exercises

You can focus on specific areas, such as using correct tenses, improving transitions, or avoiding common errors. ChatGPT can generate exercises tailored to those areas.

Prompt: “Give me a few sentences to rewrite in the past tense.” Or “Give me two simple sentences, and I’ll combine them into one.”

You can further check the correctness of what you have tried by feeding it to ChatGPT.

4. Vocabulary Expansion

ChatGPT can offer alternatives to common words or expressions, encouraging you to vary your vocabulary and develop a richer writing style.

Prompt: Can you rewrite this paragraph suggesting synonyms for all the nouns and verbs in this paragraph?

5. Structured Writing Guidelines

You can request step-by-step guidance for organizing essays, reports, or other writing assignments. ChatGPT can help outline introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions.

Prompt: “Help me outline a persuasive essay about renewable energy.”

6. Dialogue Writing

You can practise writing dialogues with ChatGPT, improving conversational writing skills, punctuation, and the use of natural language.

Prompt: “Let’s have a conversation about a movie. You can start, and I’ll respond.”

7. Translation Practice

If you are aiming to improve your bilingual skills, ChatGPT can assist by offering translation exercises. You write in your native language and then translate into the target language and give both to ChatGPT to check.

Prompt: “ Here is my translation of a paragraph in French into English. Can you check my translation and give suggestions to improve?”

8. Feedback on Style and Tone

Ask ChatGPT to review the tone of writing—whether it’s formal, neutral, or casual—and suggest improvements. This helps you adapt your style to different contexts.

Prompt : “Does this email sound too casual? How can I make it more professional?”

9. Summarization Practice

You can practise summarizing long texts with ChatGPT’s help. This is useful for building clarity, conciseness, and comprehension skills.

Prompt: “Give me a long paragraph to help my summarizing skills.” Once you summarize, feed it to ChatGPT and ask for suggestions to improve the summarization.

Tips to maximize your writing with AI Models

1. Be specific: The more detailed your prompts, the better the response will be.

2. Use AI regularly to get better results: The more you use the AI model for specific learning, the better the results will be.

3. Experiment with different styles: Try writing in different styles and learn from the variations that you see. Adapt what suits best for you.

By using these methods, you can practise and receive feedback at your own pace. Don’t hesitate to seek suggestions for improving your skills, as this will help you gradually develop stronger writing abilities in a comfortable and self-directed manner.

Please note that the prompts you provide may not always yield the same results. Variability can arise due to the model’s interpretation and the inherent randomness in response generation, fostering creativity and diversity in answers. Additionally, even slight changes in wording or context can lead to different associations and outputs.
