How to Use Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) to Help Your Coaching Clients

How to Use Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) to Help Your Coaching Clients

Our highest priority in Life and Relationship Coaching is to empower our clients to be creative and resourceful in accomplishing their goals, which is a big reason why we avoid giving advice and suggestions.

We like to think that our client has all the answers inside them, to which most clients would disagree if you were to actually say that. So how can we help our client to be creative and resourceful in generating ideas and solutions when they are feeling stuck and clueless?

Here’s my list of primary tools for helping our clients generate ideas and solutions:

  • “How” or “What” coaching questions such as “How might you solve this?” or “What are some ways to solve this?”
  • Brainstorming- one of the few times it is OK to share your ideas as long as you are focused on helping your client generate ideas as well.
  • Polling- Supporting your client to ask people in their network for their feedback and ideas (“crowdsourcing”)
  • Research- All the wisdom and information available in the world is freely and easily accessible on the internet using tools such as search engines (Google) and now A.I. (“artificial intelligence”) such as ChatGTP and Google’s Bard.

How to Use Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) to Empower and Help Your Coaching Clients

The key to using AI effectively is the “prompt” or question you ask, so you would start by helping your client convert their problem/issue into a goal and craft a question for ideas about how to accomplish that goal.

For example, let’s say you are coaching a single parent who is stressed out trying to balance their full time job with caring for their kids and can’t find time or energy for fun or dating.

In real time during a coaching session you could ask your client “Would you like to get some ideas right now via AI?” and help them craft their question or prompt, such as “How do I find time for fun or dating as a single parent with a full time job?”

Here’s what ChatGTP has to say and here’s Google Bard’s response. Notice how different they are but both are great places to start for creative problem solving and follow up questions to drill down to ideas and solution in specific areas related to the general ideas generated in the initial response, such as “How can I organize my time efficiently to find time for dating?

The Bottom Line

Artificial intelligence such as ChatGTP and Google’s Bard are great tools for empowering our clients to be creative and resourceful in finding ideas and solutions to accomplish their goals, making it much easier to use your coaching skills to move your clients forward without being directive and providing advice and suggestions. Your training and ability to help your client convert their problems/issues into goals and craft positive coaching questions lends itself well to using A.I. effectively.

Having trouble figuring out how to craft effective prompts and questions for AI? Just ask AI!
