How to upskill yourself without getting distracted

Learning how to not get distracted is a tough goal to have. Most days, you sit at your desk, ready to finally get some work done. “Okay, let's do this,” you think to yourself. You scroll over to Word or Google Drive and open up a fresh document. You have some idea of what needs to be done, but what happens next?

You write a few words down but just can’t stay focused. Then you say, “Maybe I should wake myself up with something fun.” You go to Instagram, 20 minutes gone. Then comes an hour of doom scrolling? a handful of YouTube videos. Before you know it, it is lunchtime and half the day is gone.

Distractions have a huge cost on our focus and productivity. If you want to improve or increase your focus, you need to learn to deal with the distractions in your life, and here’s how.

Pick The Perfect Study Space

Some of us work best in a library, others in a coffee shop, and there are a few who love having some noise around them. Everyone has their own perfect study space.

Consider this: ‘perfect’ is whatever keeps distractions minimal. You may not always be able to step outside and go to your favorite spot to take your online course during these times. You will have to make do with what you have at home.

Put Electronic Gadgets Away Or On Silent Mode

If you feel like limiting screen time still won’t be effective, then actually turning off your phone can make a huge difference. Next time you grab it to unlock the screen, you’ll be forced to pause and consider what you’re about to do. If you’re the type of person that unlocks their phone every few minutes, then this tip is for you.

However, if you want to go the extra mile, you can leave your phone in a place where it’s far away from where you work and study? or ask someone else in your household to keep it for you till your learning is over.

Take Timed Breaks

?“Brief diversions vastly improve focus.” Like any other muscle in the body, your brain will function well under work only when given proper rest.?

Now, what do you do during these breaks? Healthy activities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Meditation
  2. Walking
  3. Eating good food
  4. Reading
  5. Listening to music

?Remember not to get carried away with your break just as much as not getting carried away with your studying.

Get Adequate Sleep

?Sleep is the most important but most neglected part of a student’s life. Is it a surprise that 70 to 96 percent? of college students are sleep deprived?

students have online jobs, and are using their spare time to work and make an income. But most of the time it’s because of poor prioritization and stress from their studies and distractions.??

It’s important to prioritize sleep over other distractions, especially since getting enough sleep can improve your ability to focus and concentrate on your upskilling practice .

DO NOT Multi-task

Multitasking might make you look busy and important, but does it improve your productivity when studying? The obvious answer is no. There are many negative side-effects to multitasking. Some of them include:

  1. Longer duration on shorter tasks
  2. Increased frustration and stress
  3. Low level of retaining information
  4. Burnout from over-focusing

A simple solution to multitasking is creating a priority list of the tasks you wish to perform. Not only will you finish faster, but you will not have sacrificed quality.


Learning how to not get distracted is certainly easier said than done. Distractions exist in every corner of our lives these days, even if it’s in the form of a short beep generated from a notification. These kinds of distractions can seem minimal, but anything that pulls you away from your focus can get in the way of your productivity. Don’t get distracted. Instead, use some of the tips above to win back your focus and overcome distractions. Your productivity will thank you.

Does all this mean that you won’t have any distractions? Of course not. But you are trying to minimize them and get as much undisrupted upskilling done, for your own good!?
