How to Update your LinkedIn for Engineers.

How to Update your LinkedIn for Engineers.

Hey, engineering folks! Are you ready to build a LinkedIn profile that makes you stand out like the top-notch engineer you are? Let's get started with these tips:

Add goals, achievements, and accomplishments:

  • Listen, you've done some pretty amazing things in your career so far, and you need to let people know about them! Use bullet points to showcase your accomplishments and talk about your goals for the future. Don't forget to mention any awards or honors you've received along the way, like being named a Top Engineer by IEEE or receiving an innovation award from your company. Trust me, people will take notice!

Include metrics and data:

  • As an engineer, you know that data is king. So, use numbers to show off your impact and contributions. For example, tell people how many patents you've filed or the percentage of cost savings you achieved on a project. Reference any metrics or performance indicators used in your industry to provide context and show off your expertise.

Highlight your impact on the business:

  • At the end of the day, your work is all about improving the bottom line for the company. So, highlight your impact on the business. Talk about specific projects or products you've worked on and how they've benefited the company. Provide examples of how your work has improved processes or saved money.

Tailor your profile to the job you want:

  • Listen, you're not just looking for any job. You want the right job. That means tailoring your LinkedIn profile to the job you want. Use relevant keywords in your headline and summary that reflect the type of job you're seeking. Emphasize your experience and skills that align with the job description.

Show your personality:

  • Hey, you're more than just a worker bee! You've got interests and hobbies and a personality that shines. So, don't be afraid to show it off in your LinkedIn profile. Mention your hobbies and interests, and use a professional but friendly tone to build rapport with potential employers.

So, there was some high level stuff. Here are some specifics.

Include relevant keywords:?

Keywords are one of the best ways to get found on LinkedIn by the right people. Optimizing for LinkedIn’s search engine starts with?getting familiar with SEO.?

You want to create a list of your most relevant industry keywords and then make sure to include them naturally throughout your profile. Your profile’s headline, subheadline, and About section are all great places to add them.?

Here’s a pro tip: Look through a list of the jobs you’d love to apply for and read their job descriptions. Pick out phrasing and keywords that are relevant to you and incorporate them into your own profile and LinkedIn headline.

Add a relevant cover photo:?

Did you know our brains?process visuals?60,000 times faster than text??It’s for that reason that your background photo is valuable digital real estate. One way to take advantage of that space is to create a background photo that explains what you do—specifically what results your skills get—in a few words.?

If you check out my profile, I specifically added my dog Riku. I did this to feel human and to create a rapport building opportunity about my little nut job. He's got attitude and discussing that will help break the ice of an interview.

Showcase your work experience:?

Think of LinkedIn as the place where you can brag about your professional achievements. In the Experience section, list your current job as well as your last few positions.

Then make sure you fill in a brief description for each. Did your work surpass a relevant pageview milestone? Were you a top performer within your marketing team?

Did your initiative lead to a big team win? Did you win some kind of official recognition within your area of expertise? This is the space to show it all off.?

Optimize your profile for skimmers:?

Have you ever noticed you tend to skim the text you come across online? Chances are, most LinkedIn users are skimming through your profile too. This is why you want to optimize your profile for skimmers.

Especially in your About section. Don’t default to writing large walls of text. Break it down and make it readable. Opt to include only a few sentences per paragraph and use bullet points if you have to.?

Use video to showcase your expertise:?

The world is leaning much more on short-form video now than ever before. It’s normal to receive an email with a Loom video attachment because it makes it easier to share explanations and ideas with your team.?

The same thing is happening on LinkedIn. If you’re comfortable being on camera, consider creating a few short videos showcasing your expertise. Once you’ve created them, add them to your Featured section so they’re easy to find.?

By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to building a LinkedIn profile that stands out from the crowd. So, what are you waiting for? Get to it!
