Quest Staffing Solutions this article is so powerful. You've put a subject into context which should have been recognized in this regard a very long time ago. My husband, age 51, was retrenched last year, after 20 years of service at the company. He feels that he is too "old" (let's rather use the term Knowledgeable), to seek new employment and he has the perception that no one will hire someone of his age. He hasn't been for an interview in more than 10 years, other than for the positions he was promoted to internally. It's hard times currently and to come. How do you motivate an individual that is stuck in that mindset? I completely understand how he feels but I also believe that there are still companies in search of experience, knowledge and expertise (individuals of matured calibre). Very good article! The benefits speak for themselves. In addition, I have experienced that the preference / need for older (not yet retired) skills have also been declining. Applicants with an age of 50+ are not given an opportunity to compete for a position, or discarded based on various factors (perceived to be too expensive, untrainable, set in their ways, etc), while in fact they have so much to offer the business in the capacity of an "approaching retiree", including a fairly fresh career development experience for coaching and mentoring purposes, etc. I have seen many solid teams built by leaders in their Pre-Twighlight years, being old and experienced enough to recognize risk, but energetic enough to take on a good challenge
