How to unlock your creative potential
"I am not creative" is a refrain I hear often. I have also been delivering a talk on that topic proving to people that we are all creative. We were endowed with creativity when were born. We came to this world with creativity fitted inside. It is a part of our processor. And we have a creative potential.
So how do we Unlock Our Creative Potential?
I have been coaching a few people on how to unlock their creative potential. The biggest barrier is the self limiting belief that "I am not creative."
Where does this belief stem from? It is often based on several assumptions, life experiences and mistaken notions. Take a look at the following conversation with a housewife:
"Hi want to check something with you. Do you believe you are creative?"
"No I am not creative."
"Why do you think so?"
"I can't draw, paint, write, sing or dance."
"But you are so resourceful. You rustle up a quick meal for 10 guests who arrive unannounced."
"Oh but that is part of role as a housewife."
"Do you think your husband could done that?"
"No way."
"Is he creative?"
"Yes. He can sing. He can entertain. He can act."
"But can he do what you do? Rustle up dinner for unexpected guests, like you do?"
"No way."
"So he is creative in one way and you are creative in another way. Isn't it?"
"You can say that."
"So how come you keep saying I am not creative?"
"Because I can't write, sing or dance."
"Do you think he is creative?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because he can sing, entertain and act."
"But he can't cook a dinner for unexpected guest. Someone who arrives unannounced at 11:00 pm. Isn't that creative too?"
"Well now that you put it that way... may be."
"What do you understand when we talk about being creative?"
"Saying or doing something different to make something happen."
"You must be doing that in the kitchen often."
"All the time."
This is just one sample conversation with a housewife. I have had conversations with managers, vice-presidents, business heads, CEOs/CMOs/CFOs. Many of them think they are not creative. I have also coached a few to unlock their creative potential.
It involved helping them overcome their self-limiting belief "I am not creative". Showing several different and alternative ways to address issues. Be resourceful. Feel empowered.
That is what it means to unlock your creative potential. It is about getting in touch with your innate creativity. And finding expressions and applications for it.
