What’s inside this issue: How to stay top-of-mind to clients & prospects | 3 ways a newsletter will benefit your business | Why & how to make it “more letter than news” | How to get started without overthinking it
Your clients and prospects are busy. They don’t wake up thinking about you and your talents. If you want prospects (and even clients!) to remember you in their time of need - you need to remind them that you exist.
And the easiest way to do that is by staying in touch regularly with your own newsletter.
Don’t have one, yet?
Now is the perfect time to start one. LinkedIn has made it easier than ever to start your own newsletter right within the platform - in just 2 steps!
Besides helping potential clients remember you, having a newsletter (through LinkedIn or email) helps further your business in other ways, too…
And while sending out a newsletter will benefit you in many ways, the content of it shouldn’t be about you.
So what should you write about?
"More Letter Than News"
If you’re never sure what to write about in your LinkedIn posts, and even more at a loss when it comes to a newsletter, check out my last Quick LinkedIn Tips issue for loads of ideas.
I know you’ll find that you can be helpful and showcase what you know without making it “all about you.”
Then, when you sit down to write, remember this piece of advice coined by my friend, the great Ann Handley :
“Your newsletter should be more letter than news.”
Isn’t that just perfect? It’s so good, I wish I had said it!
Here’s what it means to me:
Watch this conversation from the Marketing Mentor Podcast between me and Ann Handley, where she shares her thoughts on bringing yourself into your content marketing:
Since a lot of creatives get “stuck” going back and forth about what to write about and doubting anyone will want to read what they have to say, here’s my number one tip:
Don’t overthink it.
Just follow the two steps to starting a LinkedIn newsletter, pick a helpful topic you can share, and write.
Remember, always, that your business is a laboratory for professional and personal growth.
Think of your newsletter as a place where you can run experiments. Try different topics and see what people respond to.
It really does not have to be perfect! (In fact, if it’s perfect, they may think AI wrote it.)
