In the Human Design System, there are 4 Career Types. I briefly outline them in this previous article in case you aren't familiar with them and how they work yet.
Of the 4 different Career Types, the Advisor (AKA Projector) is the most diverse as there are 3 different types of Advisors with 5 different strategies to make decisions that are correct for them.
They comprise approximately 21% of the population.
Before we jump into the details of this, the first thing that you need to understand about the Advisor is that they are here to lead and guide the process in your organization. They can see how to effectively and efficiently use as well as guide the energy of your team(s).
And you want them doing this. It's what they're made to do. This could be the most important thing to know about them.
Realize that since they are designed to guide or lead the process that they are NOT here to do ALL of the doing. Too many leaders make this mistake with the Advisors on their teams and load them up with all of the work because they are so good at what they do. Lighten their load and free them up to guide instead by giving some of that work to the Builders, THOSE guys are made for it.
Now that you know they are literally made to be the guide in your organization or team, you need to know how to interact with them if you are going to optimize their gifts. your team needs to know this too.
The best way for you to get the most from the Advisor is through recognizing them for their traits, skills, strengths and then inviting them to use them on your idea/project/role that you are offering.
Here's an example: "Teri, you have a fantastic ability to see the big picture and I need someone like this to guide this initiative."
When leaders don't use the strategy of recognizing the Advisor and then inviting them to join the group/project/initiative etc. they do themselves and their Advisor a great disservice. So please, use this strategy always.

They do their best work and are designed to work one on one. Give them the freedom to do this.
*Need a BS detector in your org? It's the Advisor. They can see things that the other types cannot.
An Advisor has a "focused" presence that is definitely recognized by others. Understand that there might be a time when someone on your team doesn't want to be around 'that Advisor' because they are not comfortable with that focused presence. This makes them great BS detectors.
Got an Advisor in your org?
Great! Let them guide and don't load them down. They aren't here to do all of the work. They guide the work.
Don't forget to use your strategy of recognition and invitation with them and you are well on your way to optimizing the talent of the Advisor so they can guide your organization towards their desired outcomes.
By understanding that each individual has a career type and by understanding some basic features of that career type, a leader can be more effective and do a better job of navigating the future of work and the changes that are coming in how we work.
