How To Turn A Fall Into A Confidence Boost

Now as a horse lover, you'll no doubt agree all horses are beautiful. Right? And so that is true. But sometimes you'll see a horse that is a bit different. Years ago, early in my equestrian journey at one of the equestrian centres I attended, a new horse arrived. Big (16.2hh ish). Grey with flecks and a fit thoroughbred type. Very striking.
When I checked in for my riding lesson, the yard manager was enthusiastic for me to try their new horse. His name was Highlight. I agreed it seemed an exciting opportunity. As I was one of their more experienced riders it was great to ride yet another different horse. (I loved riding lots of different horses for the experience and joy!).
All was going well. We were riding around the outdoor arena. And Highlight felt well schooled and responsive. Until with no warning I was going at full pelt gallop. I remember turning and the next minute being on the ground outside the arena. I didn't feel a thing, despite having broke the fencing as I fell through it. I did feel a bit breathless, but other than that was ok. Just wondering what had happened!
Highlight had spooked at something. The instructor wasn't even sure what had happened. Other than that with the speed and turning, I'd been thrown. Highlight had surprised them, and they needed more time to work out what he did and didn't like. And understand how to work with him.
Working with anyone new. Or learning a new skill, takes time. You may have a reference from a previous customer or other users of whatever it is. But you need to work it out for yourself. In so far as you need to assess what you're learning or who're you're working with. And decide how you need to react. This is all part of growing.
Highlight had seemed almost a glamourous horse. But looks weren't everything. A lovely horse who needed assessing. And not have his character determined by whoever had sold him to the riding school. But I didn't let this put me off riding. Far from it. A fall is chance to reflect on what different to do next time. I loved working out how to ride the dozens of horses I rode. This fall made me want to make sure I was quicker to react in future! A mindset to learn is vital in many spheres. Especially in business too!
I hear from social media coaching clients who get a bad experience. Either no response or a negative comment. And don't assess how they can take a realistic approach. Or don't see how they can target their preferred social media network to benefit their business. And by working on their mindset they can achieve their business goals.
Remember if you receive a setback in achieving your goal. Doesn't mean the goal is wrong. It means you may need to change what you're doing to get there. This includes altering your emotional approach. Don't take setbacks personally. Reflect, what did you do, and what can you do differently?
A growth mindset allows you to see challenges or setbacks, as part of the process. And not a block to achieving your goals. This can sometimes dent your confidence. But on the other hand, by being willing to learn and grow can increase confidence. I love this quote:
“You will either step forward into growth, or you will step backward into safety.” Abraham Maslow
Stepping forward - and growing can only help increase self-belief and confidence. Whether that's riding horses, or in business. Do you agree?
