How Troye Sivan’s Living Room Redefines Cozy Elegance with Nature

I’m excited to dive into the concept of biophilic design and give you some inspiration and practical tips using a celebrity house as an example. Troye Sivan's house, designed by Flack Studio ! I know, I know, you’ve all seen this house and know it has won many awards, but it is still my favourite design in the world! Really! It’s a perfect blend of nature and modern living and a shining example of biophilic design in action.

A Masterclass in Interior Design

Troye Sivan’s living room is a masterclass in contemporary elegance and biophilic design. This space stands out for its seamless integration with the outdoors. One of my favourite features is the small nook by the front door. Imagine sitting there, feeling the gentle breeze and natural light filtering in – it’s pure tranquillity. If the door had been a straight entry, the room’s dynamic would be entirely different.

The designers deserve big applause for their respectful approach, highlighting architectural features without overshadowing them. They truly elevated the space, adding depth and character, and creating a high-end yet cozy atmosphere. The high ceilings, while challenging for homeyness, are masterfully addressed with a welcoming colour palette that mirrors outdoor hues, natural materials, and clever textural applications. Every piece of furniture is perfectly proportioned, and the room’s simplicity, combined with natural elements, brings a sense of humble luxury. This house makes my heart hop!

Replicating the Look: Biophilic Design for Everyone

Achieving the sophisticated and character-rich look of Troye Sivan’s living room is truly a high-level masterpiece and can be challenging to fully replicate. However, in this article, I will give you some practical tips to get a glimpse of it and incorporate biophilic design principles into your own space. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Vogue

Integrate Natural Elements

  • Natural Materials: Use materials like wood, stone, and natural fibres. Wooden furniture, stone countertops, and woven rugs add warmth and earthiness. Incorporate real plants and replicate shapes, sounds, and colours of nature indoors.
  • Natural Shapes: Integrate shapes and forms found in nature. Look for furniture and decor that mimic organic forms like flowing water, leaves, and branches. These shapes create a sense of harmony and connectivity to nature.

Create a Balanced Colour Palette

  • Earth Tones: Use a colour palette inspired by nature, like shades of green, brown, and beige, terracotta to create a calming and inviting atmosphere.
  • Accent Colours: Add pops of colour through accessories like cushions, throws, and artwork to infuse personality and vibrancy.

Incorporate Art and Personal Items

  • Curate Art: Select art pieces that resonate with you and reflect your personality. This could be paintings, photographs, or sculptures that you find inspiring.
  • Personal Objects: Display personal items and collections that tell your story, such as travel souvenirs, family heirlooms, or cherished books.

Optimise Space and Functionality

  • Multi-Functional Furniture: Choose furniture that serves multiple purposes. This helps maximise space while maintaining functionality. In Troye’s living room, movable chairs create conversational seating around the comfy black leather couch looking gorgeous with age.

Respect and Enhance Existing Architecture

  • Architectural Features: Highlight any unique architectural features in your home, like exposed beams, brick walls, or original flooring. Enhance these features with complementary design elements. Many natural materials can be the art of nature and time. Embrace it.
  • Harmonise Old and New: Blend modern furniture and decor with the existing architectural style to create a cohesive and timeless look. Respect the house’s architectural style and let it guide your design choices. Biophilic design principles can be applied to any trendy design you prefer, from Japandi to mid-century.

Create a Cozy and Liveable Atmosphere

  • Ambient Lighting: Use a mix of lighting sources, including overhead lights, floor lamps, and table lamps, to create a warm and inviting ambience. Consider using dimmable lights to adjust the mood as needed. Try to count how many different sources of lighting Troye has in this one single room!
  • Earthy and Natural Materials: Incorporating natural materials creates an environment that feels inherently comfortable and welcoming. Humans have an innate connection to nature, and our spaces should reflect that.

Biophilic design is more than a trend – it’s a way to enhance our living environments and create spaces that truly feel like home. You can transform your home into a sanctuary that promotes well-being and a deeper connection to nature.
