How to triumph at work

How to triumph at work

He was a former convict who wrote and adjudicated on the entire laws of a nation without the aid of a Supreme Court (Moses: Exodus 20; Exodus 18 NKJV). She broke gender barriers and made history as the first female military consultant in her nation’s army (Deborah: Judges 4 – 5 NKJV). He was an innovator, strategist and general who helped his country gain freedom from government oppression (Gideon: Judges 6 – 8 NKJV). What did these people have in common? They had a spiritual foundation of faith.

Faith in the authority of God’s Word will always precede God’s work. So, how can you, too, build great faith to have triumph at work?

1.       Meditate on God’s Word

The Lord has given each of us a measure of faith (Romans 12:3 NKJV). “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17 NKJV). Therefore, be intentional. Listen to Christian messages about your identity in Christ. Ask yourself if you are living by it? Gideon’s new found identity in God as a “mighty man of valour”, led his country into victory (Judges 6:12 NKJV.) Are you showing up in the world as one who is fearfully and wonderfully made? (Psalm 139:14 NKJV). Do you believe that you have the power to excel in your industry because of the treasure living within you? (Philippians 4:13 NKJV) Regularly meditating on the word of God determines the rate at which you prosper. (Psalm 1:2-3 NKJV). Read spiritual materials by anointed people of God to boost your spirituality.

2.      Set your mind on things above

Sin is debilitating; it will undermine your faith in God. Sin must be seen as concerted guerrilla attack on your faith and Christian witness. Compromising on standards of righteousness affects faith in Christ. When dealing with that challenging colleague in your workplace or an unresponsive team member, always remember to rely on the Holy Spirit and lean on His guidance regarding how to respond. When you rely on the Holy Spirit and follow His dictates, you succeed in life and glorify God (1 Peter 3:9 NKJV).

3.      Work as unto the Lord

Galatians 5:6 KJV explains that faith works by love. Love for God leads to delightsome obedience (1 John 5:3 NKJV). Continuing to do well in your workplace is a sign of a servant of God (1 Peter 2:18 – 19 NKJV). Do everything as unto the Lord and He will bless the work of your hands (Colossians 3:23 – 24 NKJV). If you recognise Him as the author and finisher of what you do (regardless of who gives you the assignment) you will no longer perform at the level of average. Grow your love and faith in God by seeking to love and serve your colleagues selflessly.

4.      Consider your company

Faithless company “corrupts good manners” (1 Corinthians 15:33 NKJV). It can discourage you from engaging in covenant practices which strengthen your faith in God. Is there a Christian network at your workplace? Are there fellow believers you can pray with to commit your work day unto the Lord and ask Him to take control of your meetings? Do you confide with believers to seek godly counsel when handling office politics? Moses received advice on how delegate to avoid burnout at work.(Exodus 18:17-27). Similarly, build strong godly associations to strengthen your faith in God.

5.      Follow industry leaders of faith

Who you follow determines the faith you walk in. The results of their faith in God will dare you to believe God for miracles in your career (Hebrews 13:7 NKJV). Is there an industry leader of faith at your workplace who could be a potential mentor? Are there biographies of leaders in your field who excelled in career and faith that you could read? For example, if you are a start-up in the charity sector, have you read the biographies of the revivalist founders of Christian organisations such as Salvation Army? There may be pioneers in the Bible who you can study and emulate. For instance, Daniel was a diplomat (Daniel 1:6 NKJV). If you are in politics (or a similar field), have you considered emulating his qualities and habits? (Daniel 6: 3 & 10, Daniel 10:2-3 NKJV) (See also 2 Kings 2:8 and 14 NKJV to see how Elisha imitates Elijah for a miraculous start to ministry).

6.      Speak

Faith works by speaking. Having studied the qualities of your leaders, pray to God for the attributes you need to thrive in your career.

Do not tell yourself that you are not gifted by comparing yourself to others. You are gifted and your gifts will make room for you (Proverbs 18:16).

In any areas of lack, pray for the gifts of the Holy Spirit to bridge the gap. Have you asked God for the spirit of excellence that was upon Daniel (Daniel 5:12 NKJV) or the emotional intelligence that blessed Jonathan (1 Samuel 18 – 20 NKJV)? Have you asked for the spirit of creativity that was upon Bezalel (Exodus 31:1 – 11 NKJV.) Say what you want to see and declare the promises of God over your career. (Ezekiel 37:1; Proverbs 18:21; Deuteronomy 28:1 – 14 NKJV). Like Deborah, praise God for every subsequent work victory. (Judges 5). It will bring joy, keep you humble and strengthen your relationship with God (Isaiah 12:3).

7.      Act

Finally, faith lives by acting. By faith Moses left Egypt behind, not being afraid of the anger of the king (Hebrews 11:27 CSB). By faith, Deborah subdued kingdoms (Hebrews 11:32 NKJV). By faith Gideon became mighty in war and put foreign armies to flight (Hebrews 11:24 ESV). These were true heroes of faith. Yet God has invited us to live in something better than what they had so that they could be brought to finished perfection alongside of us (Hebrews 11:39 – 40 TPT).

Is there a promotion you would like to go for? Or a new product you would like to launch but have not had the confidence to start yet? If you have faith that God can do it, step out on faith.

Work diligently, seek knowledge and understanding (2 Peter 1:5 NKJV) and expect even greater triumphs to come.

May your faith in the power of God’s Word see you exceed limits in your career this year in Jesus' name. Amen.
