Copper. The key is copper.
Treating algae is done with copper. The traditional method uses copper sulfate. Copper is toxic and the delivery method of copper sulfate contains a lot of copper. Way more than is needed to take care of the problem, but because copper sulfate sinks straight to the bottom of the water, it has a short action time and creates two big problems.
The second options for getting rid of copper is chelated copper. This method is less toxic than the first and it allows the copper to stay in the water longer. You want this because it means it has a longer action time and thus it is more effective. However, this delivery method is still toxic and ineffective compared to the best option.
The final option is to use a copper tetra-hydride. This delivery method has very little copper, but the copper stays in the water until it is used up by the algae. This characteristic means you are using little copper to get great results. It is even safe in water that has trout. That is saying a lot because trout do not like copper and even small amounts will harm them.

So, if you have an algae problem, do not waste your time of money on copper sulfate or chelated copper. Both options do not stay in the water column and both options use lots of copper to get the job done. Instead, use a copper tetra-hydride product. There are several such products on the market. Some are name brand and others are off brand, but just like Tylenol, you can buy the name brand or you can buy a generic acetaminophen. But unlike buying these pain pills there is no placebo effect with buying the name brand.
