How Travel Medical Insurance Can Help Protect You on Your Summer Travels
Got travel plans this summer? Consider whether you need supplemental Travel Medical Insurance in addition to your traditional medical insurance plan. Whether you’re traveling domestically or internationally, a Travel Medical Insurance plan can help by providing affordable, supplemental medical coverage for unexpected illnesses and accidents.
A traditional major medical, ACA-qualified, health insurance plan should generally cover you for any true medical emergency no matter where you are in the world. So, if you are insured by a major medical plan through your employer or an individual health plan, you may have some basic emergency services included with your health plan. However, while your policy may cover you for a “true medical emergency,” that may not be all the coverage you really need. What if an urgent and serious medical need arises, and you need medical evacuation to access a more qualified healthcare facility somewhere else? The more remote you plan to travel, the more I recommend supplemental Travel Medical Insurance to provide further protection than what your traditional major medical plan offers.
Not all Travel Medical Insurance plans are the same. Be sure to evaluate the nuts and bolts of the policies and carriers you are comparing, and then design the right plan to meet your specific needs. Following are some examples of variations in policies and how much $ coverage you have in each category:
·???????? Medical Benefits – Hospital Emergency, Hospital Indemnity, Room & Board, Anesthesia, Surgery, Radiology/X-ray, Emergency Local Ambulance
·???????? Pre-Existing Conditions
·???????? Remote Transportation
·???????? Emergency Medical Evacuation
·???????? Return of Minor Children
·???????? Emergency Reunion
·???????? Trip Costs Covered
·???????? Adventure Sports Rider
·???????? Device Protection Rider

·???????? Natural Disaster Evacuation
·???????? Pet Return
·???????? Accidental Death & Dismemberment
·???????? Return of Mortal Remains
·???????? Traumatic Dental Injury
·???????? Telehealth
·???????? Maximum Limits – Some policies will cover up to the $2 million - $8 million range. You choose when selecting the policy.

Let me also add a disclaimer that you should always check with your existing major medical plan’s policy documents, including coverage provisions and exclusions, to determine what level of emergency coverage your current plan includes.

5 个月Really great tip, Holly! And for sure when traveling internationally, filing a claim through travel insurance is much easier than filing a claim with a major medical carrier.
